I know this has been done a million times but I couldn't really find a solid answer, mostly trolls.

Long story short my Chemistry class isn't going well. Even more sadly It's the most basic Chemistry class my University offers. I'm afraid that If I don't drop the class I'll receive a D or an F. If I were to drop it and take a W, then retake it and get a B or an A in the class, would that look bad on my transcript? Even more specifically, which will look worse, a D or a "W"?

Such a tough decision. Not only will I take a W, but I'll have to make payments on my loans until I go back to full time status. That W is going to cost $1000.

On the other hand, do I spend $1000 on a D? Damnit. This sucks.

On the other hand you might very well end up retaking the D down the road... and for a 4 credit class at ~$300/credit hr you'll be right back at $1000 so it'll be a wash.

I'd take the W and explain it rather than taking a huge hit to my gpa and be denied the opportunity to even give an explanation.

W is way better than a bad grade - much better than a C. W's don't hurt your GPA, and schools will screen for GPA. They may raise their eyebrows at a W, but not if you re-took the class and did well.

Take that W, retake and get an A. You can come up with some bs story of why you had to drop that class if you had to. Take the W and dont let it happen again.🙂

Drop the class. Ws don't look great, but unlike Cs and Ds, they don't lower your GPA, and as long as you don't have more than one or two Ws, you shouldn't have to worry.

Take the W any time. It does not affect your GPA and will not kill your chances to medical school unless you have too many W's. But make sure that you get an A when you retake these classes as to show the Adcom that you are capable of doing well in that class that you dropped. I got two W's my first semester of college in a calculus course and it's lab and these are the only two W's in my transcript until now and I'm a junior currently. And I have a 4.0 GPA currently. Do I regret taking the W initially? Absolutely not.

W, but that should have been obvious...
