Wait, IRTAs cant do loan repayment program?!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Probably Better to ask someone from NIH, but the first Google hit for "IRTA LRP":

http://www.lrp.nih.gov/about_the_programs/intramural/eligibility.aspx

Employment -you must be employed by or have a firm commitment of employment from an authorized official of the NIH.

  • Your appointment as a full-time NIH employee must be in a laboratory or branch that is part of the Intramural Research Program of your Institute or Center.
  • You must have a formal appointment in the Intramural Research Program of the Institute or Center, e.g., adjunct investigator.
(Please be advised that IRTA and CRTA fellows are "trainees" and not considered NIH FTE employees and are not eligible for LRP benefits.) [Emphasis mine]

I know, I saw that website.

what the hell??

So I have to be a senior investigator to get loan repayment?? How do you get to be appointed as an adjunct investigator?

Well the intention of that program is to get people who would otherwise have just been clinicians to pursue research careers. I don't think they see post-docs as a group of people whom they need to entice into research careers.
