I'm currently sitting on 2 wait-list, and with no acceptances to my name my life is sitting on the edge of uncertainty.

Anyone out there on wait-lists heard anything yet?
When I talked to Ms. Massie at VA-MD she said that there is a good deal of movement around mid-April due to the universal April 17th deadline. However, when I was talking to Patty at Tufts (I'm not wait-listed here, we were just chatting about my application) she said that they usually see consistent movement through mid-summer.

Any current vet students out there get in last year off of a wait-list? When did you hear? How'd everything work out?
I'm a little nervous that I won't hear anything until July and then be in a panic to find housing, etc before classes start.

Anyone out there just want to commiserate?

i feel ya :-( i'm sitting on a waitlist at the University of Florida (the school i am currently attending) and although i was lucky enough to be accepted elsewhere, i reeeally want to stay at UF and not knowing is driving me nuts. especially since all the good apartments will almost certainly be gone before mid-summer :-/

anyway, good luck to you! common sense tells me that most alternates should hear quite soon after the April 17th deadline, i know in my letter they state that they will "notify [me] of any change in status immediately". unfortunately i dont know any vet students that got in off the alternate list! if anyone else out there knows, drop a line ;-)

Hey! During my interiview this year at UF, one of the Freshman there had gotten off the alternate list, and she seemed to think that the alternate list wasn't so bad at UF. So, I don't know, but that might mean that people on the waitlist have a good chance at getting in. I feel like she mentioned there were a few more people that she knew of as well. Good luck with it!!

Ooo, ooo, I know someone who got in off the waitlist!

I'm currently sitting on two waitlists, although am planning on withdrawing from one (since it's out-of-state... I'm not brave enough to risk waiting that long and trying to find an apartment last-minute). Someone I work with was on the waitlist for the U of MN last year, and got in as #17 in the in-state pool. I am #14, so I am praying and crossing fingers that things move the same way this year as last!

I am going nuts with the uncertainty... but I keep reminding myself that I'd rather have acceptance still be a possibility than to be certain of a rejection... right?

Good luck to all,

~SD

I am currently waitlisted at Colorado State University. This is completely driving me nuts. I'm praying that I get in this year. I also haven't heard anything from Oregon State University. I haven't gotten a rejection, acceptance, or waitlist letter. Anyone know anything about Oregon State?

I know what you mean. I'm getting worried about that too. I don't know if I should sign up for summer classes or not. I'm very close to a second major and 2 minors which I'd happily ditch for now for an acceptance...but if I could finish them I'd like to make those plans. If I need to apply again next year, I'd want to take summer classes to boost the GPA, but I'd rather not get half way through them and then loose my money and withdraw.

One school, which I will not name for now, told me that they took someone a week into classes one year. Could you imagine that? "Hey folks I need to fly across the country to live in a hotel and become a doctor....please ship my belongings...tata" scary

Niether my friend nor myself had heard from Oregon State, so I called them last week and the lady I spoke to was very nice and she said that they had not filled the class yet and that they were going to mail letters out starting Friday (3/31) or early this week. So hopefully we will hear from them soon!

I just want to say hang in there guys 🙂
I was accepted into Oregon and I heard from them in early February, but I am not going so maybe I made a spot for somebody else.
I was also accepted into University of Minnesota and I also will not be attending there which means so somebody else will be.
I do think that people who were accepted are now making their final decisions, so there will be alot of movement in waitlists during the month of April.
I was waitlisted at four schools and was accepted into one of them. I asked two of the other three schools to take me off their lists, but I am holding out for the possibility of an acceptance at Colorado State.
I know that schools are anxious to fill their classes with the most qualified people they can find which means finalizing the class as efficiently as possible so don't give up!

I know how all of you wait listers feel. I am on the list at Michigan State. Man, all I can hope for is to get lucky enough to get called...please let it be before August!!!!

I have also heard stories of students getting in after classes have started. I believe I heard from a reputable source, but it could be an urban myth.

At least for my state school VA-MD the in-state list is only 15 people. However, they won't tell you were on the list you are or on average how many they take off the list. I do know from a 4th year there now that last year or the year before they took the whole list (happy dance), however, I really can't get my hopes up just to be dashed. Right now I'm making plans on what to do if I don't get a phone call, because if I do the decision will be easy.

Good luck to everyone.

I personally know someone who was taken off the waitlist the day before classes started...after orientation....so it happens.....

it ain't over until applications are due for the next year! 🙂

Yeah, I don't know if Dean Thompson mentioned this when you interviewed (he talked about it after my group interviewed), but he said his personal goal is to have the exact amount of people that he can accept on the alternate list (he mentioned that he has averaged in the past ten years about 9 people on the list). He said he wants us to feel like we have succeeded and can start making plans about attending if we find we are on the alternate list. I know for a fact (from speaking to current students) that the past (at least!) 3 years they have actually called people who were rejected! and offered them a place in the class, since they had exhausted the alternate list. So i'm not too bummed, hopefully we'll be classmates FloridaGirl! where are you from? do you go to UF currently? Anyway, i'll be sure to post when I find out! good luck to everyone else on alternate lists!!

It sounds to me like VA-MD has a similar outlook about their wait-list. I was told through the grape-vine by a first year student that if they tell you you're an alternate you have a reallly good chance. Which sounded to me like there was a chance even if you weren't (ie they have called people formally rejected when they run out of alternates).

However, not all schools are this way. Case and point, Wisconsin, I'm 108 (yes, you read that right) on their list and they explicitly said that they generally take 25-85 (over shot that one by a good 23 people!). So some schools give you a number in order to gauge your chances on getting in.

haven't heard anything back from oregon either...

I don't want to get any hopes up since you don't know where you are on the alternates list, but I withdrew from VA-MD last week. They're strange because you don't *have* to send them notification that you're not coming - they only want to know if you are coming. So they probably won't know how many spots they have to fill until after the 17th. I sent them an official withdrawal letter anyway so that maybe they'll let someone on the alternates list know before the first day of class. 😛

To Whom It May Concern:
I also withdrew from Purdue, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. I apologize for hogging your seats for so long!

I've narrowed my choices down to 3 now, but don't know where I'm going yet (choices are NC State, Davis and UPenn). So if you're on the alternates list at one of those, it might move up. I'm leaning towards Davis (any suggestions?).

Anyone know anything about UPENN waitlist schedule? I was on the HOLD list and They said they were making decisions by the first of April. I haven't gotten anything in the mail or any phone call yet 😛

They had their last set of interviews last Friday, so I would guess those still on hold should be hearing something soon.

Just wanted to say that the NC State and Tufts out of state lists should be moving within the next couple days, I just sent my denial yesterday...

fresian - i made the choice between Penn and NC State this week, 2 very nice schools, 3 in your case (I didnt have Davis in my mix)... good luck with that, maybe we'll be classmates 🙂

I sooo know how you feel. I am an alternate at Iowa State and am praying I make it in this year (and find out before August). Waiting and not knowing are the worst combination. How do you plan for the future?? Arg....this is very frustrating 😡

I feel ya mochavet. I've been a research tech for almost 6 years, so I have a lot of things to get in order if I get in. Not to mention, I'm supposed to give 2 weeks notice.....if the call doesn't come until August, they will have to let it slide. Would also be nice to be able to find a place to live without having to live at a residential hotel or something. I'm waiting for Michigan State, so I will have to move. I'm waiting on Michigan State, so if accepted I'll have to move from Georgia.

keppsu1 - I am almost in the same boat, except if I get in late in the summer I will have to live with my in-laws for a month or two until I find a place that allows two large dogs. That is a very scary scenerio trust me! Plus, I would love to be able to quit my job as soon as possible and move on with my life, but I can't because my future is so uncertain at this point. I also have to get my house sold so I can pay for school. Oh well, I guess being an alternate is better than nothing. I'm hoping I'll get a call soon after the April 17th deadline. Do you know where you rank? I'm keeping my fingers crossed for both of us!

mocha- they dont reveal the size of the list or where you are on it at Michigan State. BUT....the last few years, all of the alternates have gotten in. Should also help (a little?) being out of state.

Kepp - That is encouraging that they've taken all alternates in the past. Iowa State gives you a rank so you at least know where you stand. I am in a position where some years I'd get in and some years I wouldn't. So, it is really a toss up. I am on the non-resident list too, which should help. Is Michigan the only school you applied to? Is this the first year you have applied?

I am also on the Michigan waiting list! The wait is driving me nuts!!! I have still been checking my status page on their website. My page used to say "awaiting a decision" now it says a "decision has been made-check your mail". What does this mean? Is it anything? Anyone elses page change?

Mine says "a decision has been made - sent via regular mail" Did yours say this exactly, or did it really say check your mail (as in your post)?
At least things are moving along.

Sorry mine does say "sent via regular mail", I just wrote it wrong!!! It does seem like things are moving along..hopefully in our favor 😕

Well for those who are alternates at OSU, I just received my alternate letter today and I'll be withdrawing from the list. I'm the #8 OUT-of-state candidate on the alt list, so anyone beyond #8 can expect to move up a spot with me out of the running 🙂
I admittedly am sort of curious about whether or not I would be offered a spot from that high up on the list, even though I've already sent my paperwork and deposit to Michigan... but I wouldn't be that cruel to the rest of the hopeful-future-vets community 😉 So tomorrow, I send my letter declining the alternate spot! Good luck, all!

Welp,
I've been keeping my eye on this forum for any idea about michigan state as I too am on their waitlist. Ok, stalking the forum is more like it. I just checked my status page and it says the same exact thing. I would think they would be making phone calls to notify alternates...but I guess their website does say that they notify via regular mail, which is why the process can take so long. But if other applicants have heard that all the alternates have been accepted in years past (I've not heard that personally, just on here), maybe we've lucked out! Now the wait is REALLY killing me...

According to this site, two of us have called MSU to ask about the alternate thing. Both of us were told the same thing....in the past couple years, everyone has gotten an offer. Still, they will not be notifying anyone until at least April 17 (they also told me this on the phone).
When did you interview? Just curious if we perhaps met. Mine was on Feb. 17. Also, are you in or out of state?

I'm actually in-state so I interviewed December 6....meaning I've been playing the waiting game for a long time. Hmm, not notifying anyone til after the deadline. Thought they might send some of those letters of acceptance out earlier if they got enough notices of non-acceptance. Ah well. Has your status page said "Decision has been made" since you received your alternate letter or is this a new revelation?

I don't think we are on the same list (I think they are separate from what I gathered during my phone conversation, and based on what most schools do....not completely sure though). I don't understand why they wouldn't call/send letters if they get a letter from someone who declines an offer. Ah, eureka.....it might be because they have had people in the past decline before the deadline, and then come back and say they want in. Technical/legal issue most likely.
I didn't know that my status page was updated until someone else mentioned that they had changed the decision note at the top. It said "awating a decision" for awhile after my letter arrived.

so who has the skinny on upenn's wait list organization? I think they have a seperate list for in state/contract state, and out of state, but I'm not sure.

I sent my acceptance as alternate the other day. I'm not sure if they give you a # or what though.

They do have two seperate lists and I know they have told people their ranking in the past... I dont think the in-state list moves much at all, Ive heard of it not moving at all some years and only 1 or 2 spots in other years. I have no idea about the out of state list. There is a little search button at the top of the forum, you might have some luck finding out more info if you look for penn alternates from past years on this board, or Penn, I would think, would be able to tell you something after the 4/17 deadline.

Good luck! Maybe we'll be classmates 🙂

Update for those on waitlists... I have decided to accept at UGA so that opens up a spot at Tennessee (sent my letter today) and Michigan (will be sending later today). I got a phone call from Auburn yesterday offering me a spot (I was on the alternate list there) and declined, so the Auburn list is definitely moving. I don't know where I was on the list, but it is moving. I was also on the out-of-state alternate list at Texas A&M so that alternate list will be moving as well.

Good luck to everyone, now that the first deadline is just around the corner I hope you will be hearing soon!

Hey guys!!!!

Hi Mokadet... I want to commiserate! I saw you on this forum and wanted to say hi because we applied to the same schools. I'm a VA resident too but was rejected from Va-Md (I have no idea why! I'm a good fit for their "competitive applicant" stats on the website). Congrats to you for getting on the wait-list! I know two people who recently graduated from Va-Md who were both wait-listed and DID get in that year. And they were both really good candidates at the time of application (i.e., I think even the best of us get rejected/wait-listed! Or at least I hope  ). So, there's definitely hope there.

I'm also on the wait-list at Tufts... I got the same answer from Patty, although I really hope it doesn't take me that long! I fear it might since I'm out-of-state (do you know if they have separate lists?).

Where else are you wait-listed?

Thanks for the encouraging news about Va-Md (still no news though 🙁 ) and congrats on Tufts. I've interviewed there two years in a row and was rejected both times (not even the glimmer of hope as an alternate!). I am 99% positive that they have two lists: one for in-state and one for out-of-state. They keep the two pools very separate and about 30% of in-state students are accepted whereas only about 5% of out of state students are accepted - due to the difference in number of applicants. It's this reason that I'm entertaining the idea of moving to Mass and establishing residency. (to get an interview as an out-of-stater you must be in the upper 1/3 of the pool and if approx the upper 1/3 of in-staters are getting accepted - my chances are good - this of course is assuming that the applicant pools are equally proportioned) I talked to Rebecca Russo about this and she said that it could be a good idea, but she was really encouraging and optimistic about my alternate status at Va-Md, so she told me to wait it out and call her back in a few months if I still haven't heard anything from Ms. Massie.

And I'm also an alternate at Wisconsin (however, well above their published number of wait-listers they generally take).

QUOTE]

Tufts definitely keeps separate wait-lists for in state and out of state. I'm under the impression that both lists have 40 people. They will definitely only give an out-of-state spot to someone from the out-of-state list, the class is always 40 Massholes and 40 out-of-staters. I spent two years on the in state list, so I'm at least familiar with the wording in the letters!.... They claim to try to fill empty spots with comparable applicants (i.e. someone with the same interests as the person who turned down the spot). However, most of the cynics I know (including myself) believe that they rank the alternate list, just like everyone else. Some years they have completely exhausted both lists, other years they only take a few.

I was told by the admissions counsellor I met with two years ago (Monica McDonald) that they move much more quickly through the out-of-state list. Makes sense, although its not much of a tuition break, there are advantages to staying with your in state school. Both years that I was on the list, I got a letter in late July stating that they'd filled the class already, but would I like to stay on the list in case anyone doesn't show up or drops out in the first week ok school (they'll only take someone in the very first week, so at least you know you can only agonize until Sept 1! unless, of course, you get in before that!!). From what I hear from past Tufts students, there is always the one poor student who has to move to Grafton from Minnesota after classes have started!

Hope that helped! Good luck!!!
🙂 Miranda

Just wanted to say that CSU's out of state list is moving. I was initially #8 on the list and was offered a spot today. Probably going to turn it down though...

Ohhhh boy... Does this mean I get to go back to the obsessive email-phone-mailbox-checking days? Yay, I missed them! 🙄

Good luck to everyone! Congrats, PAThbrd 🙂

I'm sorry to hear about Wisconsin... Although I'd bet that you'll be into Va-Md in no time.

I know of three people (on this forum and another) who were wait-listed at Tufts and turned it down, and all three were out-of-state... that can only work in my favor! Like someone else said... I seriously doubt that they are taking applicants "with similar interests"... that's B.S.

What would it take to establish residency in Mass? I'd like to if/when I get in to save on tuition, but I don't know if or how it's possible.

Unfortunately, if you are to get in this year your status will remain the same as long as you are a student. You cannot become a Mass resident while you are a student. I posted about this in another thread but can't remember which.

Hi. I am also on the waitlist at CSU, but when they sent me my letter I was not assigned any sort of a rank. Were you ranked right away or did you have to request your number on the list? I probably wouldn't go now, but I am kind of curious.
Thanks!

Thanks!

I sent an email to the general vet school admissions address and received an email back from Dr. Sherry Stewart (asst. dean for student affairs) telling me my specific rank. She also said that they went to #80 last year, and have gone into the 100's in previous years.

Yup, same here... she's actually the one that called/emailed me yesterday 🙂
