Wait-list Support Group

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Once you get to the waitlist, the committee vote means more than anything else.
A low stats candidate with a strong vote will beat high stats without.
does that vote happen before you go on the waitlist or do committees meet and vote again when pulling people off? i thought the dean just pulls people off on unranked waitlists or secretaries send emails going down ranked waitlists

This will vary by school, but the will of the committee can be executed without re-convening.
The Dean is not independent of the committee's decision. Here is LCME Standard 10.2:
"The final responsibility for accepting students to a medical school rests with a formally constituted admission committee."

makes sense or else would seem really inefficient/tedious lol. im guessing they usually agree with the deans decisions?

Okay, I see, I had assumed that the previous post was regarding the applicants as equal outside of their stats, hence my confusion.

Gyngyn, thanks for doing this! Your posts are so helpful. How much overlap does your school have with Loyola?

gyngyn. Is poaching unlikely, irrelevant or likely for a school to be poached within the same city. In other words if someone was accepted to Columbia or NYU will Cornell or Mount Sinai stay away?
It's mostly irrelevant.

Gyngyn, can a school that rejected/did not interview you see where else you have gotten in or have been waitlisted after May 1?
If you applied to them, they can see where you have been accepted.
We never see where you are waitlisted.

Why would they look though? They probably have better things to do than see where someone they rejected got accepted.

@gyngyn Thank you so much for doing this! Does your school have any overlap with Creighton?

Texas Roundup 5/16 : Since my last scroll through Texas schools on 5/12, I have seen members post:
3 accepted off Texas A&M wait-list
1 accepted off UTSA wait-list
Oddly enough, some of these probably left another Texas school to take these spots, but no happy announcements on other Texas school pages. I think 2 of these had not had prior acceptances.
Such is the incomplete and one-side-of-the-story nature of scrolling through the message boards!
I also wonder where the people freeing up those 3 spots at Texas A&M are going instead?

First waitlist movement at my top choice school by far is Thursday.

Lease for sick apartment (got it off of the apartment waitlist lol) at my one current acceptance had to be signed by EOD on Wednesday or we lose it, and most other housing is filling up very fast.......

GAHHHHH

For people holding an acceptance at a school but hoping for waitlist movement at other schools, how long are you planning to wait? Are other people holding off on signing leases to hear back from waitlist schools?

I'm waiting until June 1st. I was supposed to be waiting until today but I postponed my self-imposed deadline to give my favorite school some extra time to see the error of their ways 😉 (that's a joke).

Psh. Exactly. They'll come around... *hair flip* 😉

End of the month or whenever I am backed into a corner and need to sign a lease, whichever comes sooner

I've already dropped those who I would not consider over my current acceptance.

Gyngyn, could you please check tomorrow morning for any movement at Upstate? not sure if u have overlap w them

Does anyone know how FAFSA (federal loan) is affected if you get off the waitlist at another school? If you applied with the school you were originally accepted at, how do you work around that?

What do you mean work around that?
When you submit your FAFSA you can select multiple schools for it to be sent to, so that if you get off the waitlist somewhere they'll already have your FAFSA on file.

Couple of people were pulled at FIU yesterday.

We have to notify the school at which a candidate holds an acceptance when we plan to offer them an acceptance off the waitlist. It has no direct effect on applicants.

gyngyn, does this mean the school you have been accepted to knows you'll get an acceptance call days ahead of when you get the call? Or is it more like your school will just give a formal call and then call up the student?

Like how far out do you plan out when you call a student to pull them off the waitlist?

We call the school before the student, usually the same day.
