Wait lists and April MCATs

I am not a re-applicant...yet. I'm wondering if any of you guys who applied last year might have been able to effect your chances with new April scores. Were any of you on wait lists into June?.... could a late MCAT score have helped?

I'm trying to figure out how to overcome a 6VR. I am sure I can do better but I am deep into this years application cycle. If I can eek myself onto a waitlist would they look at new MCAT scores?

Yes, it could definietely help if you are on a waitlist. I was on two waitlists, and one of the schools basically told me that if I improved my score by taknig the April MCAT I could be accepted. I couldn't take it for many reasons, but if you can prepare in time, you should do it.

Wow! I'm surprised by this. How often do you think this happens? In other words do you believe this was a more unique situation to you, or have you heard of others getting that same deal (ie get a higher April score, and we'll accept you)?

I'm intrigued because my application is pretty strong, except for my horribly low MCAT score. I'm wondering if I let it be known (like in my secondaries, or if I get interviews I can mention it there) that I'm taking the April MCAT, if that would sway their decision on me. What do you think?

I absolutely think that if you are on a waitlist in June and get a significantly higher score on the MCAT in April, the adcom will make you their next pick. The problem in your situation is being able to get on a waitlist in June (depending on how low your score really is). There are several schools who don't actually reject anyone they interview until the start of classes the following year, so if you happen to interview at one of those, I think you'll be in good shape. But as far as the admissions process goes right now, the adcoms won't "trust" you to get a good score in April -- they're going to base their decision on your current qualifications.

i'm not a reapplicant as well..but i as well want to overcome my 6VR. So, what you guys are trying to say is if i can make it onto a wait list for june, then if i got a higher score, i could be accepted into med school that year or the following year? i hate to think of retaking that damn test again......

By "horribly low" I mean a 23Q . . . no, I'm not one of those who's crying over my 31! Anyway, I've actually gotten a secondary from UCSF, and that was with my old score of 22N . . . Stunning, huh! With that in mind, I know the rest of my application is solid. I have the GPA, master's degree, tons of research experience, EC's, honors, leadership activities (including lots in minority affairs, though I myself am not a URM; I'm Vietnamese, or "Asian"). My "unique" quality is I've done all of the above as a single mother, so you might have guessed I'm a nontrad as well. So my point of all that is I KNOW my application is solid, except for that stupid MCAT score. I just don't know if schools can get over that long enough to let me get them a score in June. I'm intrigued though, because this makes me think I should pursue my other secondaries, if I get them (I posted earlier that I was thinking of not filling out any more secondaries, becaues it would be a waste of time).

Does anyone think if I were to call the schools I applied to, would they tell me whether or not they'll consider April MCAT scores? I'm not sure if a "pre-emptive" strike is the right way to go with this. I don't want to appear desperate, or annoy them.

Hey! I'm engaged too! How many kids? I have one, and he's 10, so I'm not feeling too bad about starting medical school. I don't know how people have young children and attend medical school. I met this one woman who has 4 kids, and they're all younger than my son. Crazy! She's an inspiration, that's for sure. Are you applying this year? I've been posting to this forum because I'm afraid I'm going to have apply again next year. I got a 23Q on the August MCAT, and that's after a 22N in April. I don't think med schools are going to look too kindly on that. Oh well. Live and learn. Take care.

LOL! No kidding! I would like a point for every year old my son is . . . that brings me up to a respectable 33!
