I'm on 2 waitlists currently and getting ready to reapply. as much as I'm trying to push it out of my mind the waiting is absolutely killing me. I have no idea where I'm going to be next year, or if I'm even going to be in medical school, I may end up putting $500+ into a primary AMCAS just to get accepted off a WL the next day. I can't go about finding an apartment, since you technically have to know what city it's going to be in first. sigh.. i don't have a question, just wanted to rant and looking for a little empathy! damn this sucks! 😱

I was in the same spot as you last year.. and it didn't work out. The best thing you can do is move-on, start focusing on plans for the next year, how to better your application and enjoy the gap year. You won't actually have to submit AMCAS until June 4 at the earliest, this is 2 weeks after the big May 15 date, and if you haven't heard by then your chances are fairly reduced.

On the flip side, not getting in might sound like the end of the world, but I had an absolutely fantastic gap year, made money, felt what it was like to work in the real world (I am an engineer... i can't even begin to explain to you how much this perspective will make me a happier doctor in the future), improved my app with additional volunteering/clinical, and re-charged for med school.

A huge % of the applicant pool every year are re-apps. Don't lose too much sleep over whether you're gonna get in, if you get a letter one day and it happens this year, that's awesome, otherwise, next year.

Best of luck!

I'm kind of in the same boat as you but with 1 school 😕. My plans are pretty much in limbo because I have no idea what to do. I want to look at apartments and stuff but can't really do that until I at least get an acceptance. I also don't know what to do about my work schedule for this next year because I don't want to get too many obligations if I'm not going to be here!

I just want to hear something!

The waiting game sucks. Let's play Hungry-Hungry-Hippos!

sometimes the best course in medicine for a patient is watchful waiting. Same is true in medical school acceptance.

This^. It's just part of it. There's nothing you can do, and if it doesn't work out this year, it's not the end of the world. I took a gap year last year, and it paid off. I had time to refocus, enjoy life, and just breathe in general.

It must have been beneficial, bc I received multiple acceptances this past cycle.😉

I'm on the same ship. My plan is to retake the mcat in July, then grad school (1 year program). Good luck to all of us.

Does anyone know what the probability is for waitlisted students to get of off the list?

Unfortunately, I think that varies, a lot from school to school. Some schools only interview a small number, say, about 300 (i.e. Brown, Wake Forest), so I'd assume in a case like that a waitlist + letters of intent would probably help you out a lot. On the other hand, some schools might wait-list 100s of people in which case your chances could be less. If you have access to the data, check and see how many people from your school of choice are interviewed and how many people have to be accepted in order to fill a class, this might give you a better sense (I think US News has this if you pay for it).

I know I'm in a better position having been accepted but the fact that I'm trying to get off waitlists still is screwing me over too because I can't fully commit to a housing situation yet; I'm almost certain I'm going to end up having to pick something last minute. That being said, I was in your shoes a year ago hoping to get that first acceptance and it's a brutal feeling.

Isn't this the fun time of the year? I'm on the same train as y'all, 'cept only got 1 waitlist. My plan has been to assume I'm not getting into medical school this year and live life as such. Granted, that's no where near easy due to the fun of apartment hunting (as previously stated, a city is kind of required. In my case, I don't even know state haha). Luckily, or rather unluckily, a friend of mine is in the exact same spot. Since both of our lives are up in the air, we just have fun with it while our families freak out.

Haha 👍

It seems like everyone already has an acceptance or all rejections. Anyone in the same boat as me and only have waitlists spots? Any advice to deal with the torture?

same boat but with one waitlist.... I'm trying to find the motivation to rewrite PS and the rest of my app, and finding jobs for the next year, but I have lost a lot of hope and I dread wasting anymore money on med school admissions (what a scam!).... I think the best advice comes from the great film Finding Nemo....just keep swimming...

Yup, 7 waitlists to be exact... From what I can tell this boat is pretty crowded. The only thing that has helped me through this is planning a summer trip. Best of luck!

What's your stats? Or anyone else on a wait list this year.

3.4 undergrad 3.8 grad 27 mcat waitlisted at state school

Sorry OP, don't me to detract from what you were saying, but your thread reminded me of a throw back:

i'm on all waitlists obvi haha. I have a full time job right now that I'm just starting in case they don't pan out, i feel really bad though because my current employer has no idea there's a possibility I may be leaving in a couple of months.. I omitted that in the interview because I am desperately broke and needed this job if only for the summer:xf:. oh well, I'll cross that bridge when I get to it I guess

I feel like we're on the Titanic and we're the ones that got left behind w/ out the life boats. I'll share my ornate door with anyone if we make it out of this :xf:

I'm waitlisted at two schools, waiting to hear back from a third post-interview. All in drastically different parts of the country. I'm employed and getting by, so I'm just trying to enjoy life for the time being. Relish in the fact that I can go out on weeknights and melt my brain with hours of television lol. But it still sucks not knowing. Most of my friends know where they're headed, and I'm in limbo. +pity+

3 waitlists here...currently applying to SMPs and such for a back up plan. I'm just as angsty as the rest of you!

April and May are just painful months, sigh.

I'll never let go!

It appears that some schools will keep wait lists open until the actual start of classes, likely to insure that all the seats are filled. I have had a student who was formally accepted 2 days before classes started at the medical school.
lol its stories like this that make this wait agonizing!

I know someone who was accepted the day before class!

Be glad you're not playing the hunger games 😱

Whats the latest anyone has ever heard of anyone getting in from a waitlist?

have a decent position on one WL, of course there's no guarantee of anything. my other school doesnt tell you anything. like nothing.

Happy May 15th Eve everyone! :xf: to us all.

3.7 29R mcat, rejected from my state school post-waitlist (haters gonna hate i guess) on the WL at 2 private schools.

What state? and what was your MCAT breakdown?

Good luck everyone! Today/tomorrow begins a (hopefully) exciting next few weeks.

Hopefully exciting. If not, well how about a party on the 31st of may? A Waitlist Island Party.

thanks for the words of encouragement guys! i started a full time job this week that I'm loving so far, and have come to terms with the idea of a year off. if i end up getting accepted it will be a wonderful surprise! but if not I'm okay with some time off of school. this acceptance of my situation has made this waiting much more bearable haha
