Hi everyone! So...I am located in a little bit tricky situation in terms of medical school applications and would like to see if anyone of you could give me some advice. Thanks so much for your time in advance!

I am currently accepted into MSU DO and waitlisted on BU (MD). The email from BU that notified me of their decision indicated that the majority of the movement will happen June 1st-July 31st, which is understandable considering the fact that most MD school curricula start in the middle of August.

I have heard that, although an applicant has paid the deposit to simply hold the seat, one is not considered officially committed to the school until the very first day of orientation. That said, if I were to get accepted off the waitlist from BU (which is my top choice) before June 10th (MSU DO orientation, class starts in June 15th--I know they start early), I am allowed to rescind the earlier acceptance and go to BU. There are a couple of questions I would like to ask you regarding this situation:

1. Is my understanding above correct? When would be the latest time that I can hold acceptance from MSU DO without giving up being on the BU waitlist; is it June 10th (orientation) or June 15th (class start) in this scenario? Also, does this "traffic rule" hold true when discussing DO acceptance while holding the MD waitlist status? It is a little confusing to me.

2. I know that ALL MD applicants must commit to ONE MD school by May 15th. Is there such process I will need to take for this DO acceptance? Also, Lets say I take that step; does that mean I am not allowed to go to BU even when I luckily get to be removed from the waitlist before June 10th (or June 15th)? Or can I still move onto my first choice if that happens?

3. I was thinking of asking MSU DO directly about this, but was uncertain how I may convey this message as I do not want to give them impression that I am all ready to move onto a different school whenever possible. Any advice?

4. I have got this idea from sdn that BU's waitlist movement has not been significant at all past few years. If anything movement happens, it seems that it most likely occurs, as already indicated in their email, in June-July. I think that it is too early for me to give up on this waitlist though despite the slim chance and the time constraint I am experiencing, so I would like to try my best anyway in communicating with the schools to be content with my application process. As an effort, I was thinking of sending the dean of admission/ office of admission an email explaining my situation and asking if they would be willing to give me an update about my waitlist status approximately by the first week of June (whether it's a yes or no). When I got on my BU secondary application a couple of days ago to accept my waitlist status, I saw this note saying that an applicant could tell them if he/she has any personal deadlines, and began to think maybe that's what I should do. A note even explicitly indicates that the reasons for personal deadlines may include other acceptances or apartment rentals, but here again, I would like to take a cautious approach in delivering my message. Can I have your candid opinions about the best/ the most appropriate actions I could take?

I know that this is a long message containing a lot of questions, and any insightful advice from you would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks so much..!
