So, I'm on three waitlists (two "high priority") with no actual acceptances, and I'm starting to make backup plans for next year in the event that I don't get in... but it's a little tricky. Is there a good way to do this that I'm overlooking, or is it really just ridiculously difficult?

Because I could easily stay at my current job for another year and I have a clinical research internship I could set up as well as some volunteer stuff, but on the other hand... I can't really say "yes, I'll definitely be there in September, hold my spot", because maybe there's still a small chance that I'll get in off one of the waitlists.

Actually, the things I'm setting up as my backup plan are pretty good experiences, I think... so here's a random question: is there any way it would be possible to say to med schools: hey, what if you just let me in with a sort of automatic deferral? I won't clog up space in your class this year, but you can let me in for the year after?

Or will they just be like "yeah, that's what reapplication is for"?

Any advice?

I'm in the exact same position. I'd also love it if they would accept me for next year's class instead...

I do think that if you told them pre-acceptance that you wanted to deffer, they'd just ask you to reapply. Once you get in off the waitlist, then you could definitely talk to them about it.

What happens if you set up the internship, get in, and then don't go to the internship?

Well, nothing really... I guess it's just sort of rude. What's really more of a problem is my job - I have a decent job at the moment that I can keep for another year if I want to, but it's starting to get a little bit sticky always having to say "yes, yes, wait, hold my spot, don't replace me yet... but I can't sign the contract right now." Plus, it's in a different country. I would really just like to know what continent I should expect to be living on in September! 😉

Anyway. I see your point though - I guess there's very little material difference between me saying "hey, I'll make your decision easier: I get that this year's class is full, so why don't you just stick me in the next one instead?" and "actually, I don't want to come this year - can I have an automatic deferral?".

Guess I'll just keep waiting then... unless anyone else has any ideas?

I've heard that deferrals are very difficult to get unless there is a compelling reason. Doesn't sound like your reason is going to be good enough for a deferral. Hopefully you hear back soon.

It's really simple, if you get accepted then go to medical school.
