Hi there! I got waitlisted at one of my top choices and they mentioned there isn't WL movement until the spring. In this scenario, what is the preferred method of continuing to show my interest in the school? Since it's early, I'm not sure if sending updates once every ~8 weeks is okay or if I should wait until later in the spring to send updates/letter of interest. I've interviewed at schools that say they like to hear from applicants once a month, but since it's pretty early in the cycle, that feels like overkill. Any advice here? Thanks!

I would just send an update in early January. If you send a substantial update now it may have less impact by the time schools are getting ready to pull from the waitlist.

How much WL movement does this school usually have? WL can range from soft R to periodic reviews to compare applicants to each other

If this school didn’t specifically say they want a monthly update don’t do it. And only do it when you have several excellent things to tell the school. Save these events and make one grand and glorious update.
For the schools that want monthly updates try to do that. Especially if you have any real interest in attending the school.
Good luck.
