(I am an international student with no Green Card and I'm not Canadian)

In the 2014-15 cycle, I was accepted at a great school that I was looking forward to attend (School #1). However, due to their requirement of a 4 year escrow and recent financial troubles within my family, I no longer think I will be able to attend this school this year.

I was also waitlisted at my top choice (School #2) where I can get institutional loans and other forms of financial assistance on top of student loans. If I were to be accepted off the waitlist, I could attend this Fall.

Now that I'm in this position, I am thinking of deferring my acceptance to School #1 for one year in the hopes that things might improve/change and that I will be able to afford the conditions to attend. (I've already explained my financial situation and the school has allowed me to defer, they now await my acceptance of their conditions). However, I'm not sure if accepting their conditions of not applying to other schools for 2016 and applying as a deferred matriculant would also require me to withdraw myself off School #2's waitlist.

How do I to ask for clarification from either school without seeming as if I'm not interested in them (which is unfortunate because they were my top two choices).
Any advice?

You are not required to withdraw from waitlists, even if granted a deferral.
You may not re-apply, though.

Thank you for your quick reply! I'm going crazy on this waitlist right now and it's probably just making me paranoid.

What happens if a student gets into a school and defers a year (during which this student applies to different med schools from the previous cycle)?

I understand this is not allowed and would result in acceptances being rescinded if schools found out but do schools actively search for such info?

This would be a breach of contract (a serious promise).
