Could anyone tell me how waitlists work, apart from the obvious? Are you ranked? Is it first-respond-first-served? How long are they, on average or at least at SUNY Buffalo and how likely is it that you'll get in if you're on one? Does it affect you if you aren't chosen and reapply the next year?

I'm convinced everyone who's waitlisted is part of a control group for a study on ulcers. This is going to be the death of me.

I think you can get the best info from the school where you were waitlisted. Things are usually handled differently at different universities.

Personally, I have been waitlisted at UCSF. Yes, they do rank the students on the list. They also sent the waitlisters an email outlining what the steps are to retain their spots on the waitlist (ie. confirming enrollment in pending pre-requisites) and a timeline of when they will be receiving updates as to their status or number to be called--such as how close they are to being the next person called.

Hope this helps! And don't worry; although being on a waitlist is nerve-racking, at least you know that you still have a chance. And just call the school and ask for more information, because the more informed you are about how things will play out, the less stressed you'll feel. 😉
