I am a family physician appying for a second residency in psychiatry. I would like to know any feedback/info on the Wake Forest program.

Good Question.
I have worked in the psych. field before and found aspects of it very satisfying. I almost went into it as an MSIV but decided on FP because of some loan- for-service commitments. Psychiatry has changed quite a bit for the better with more evidence based therapies available. While this is true of many fields in medicine, FP is so generalized that it is often difficult to be a central part of the changes that are taking place. I have enjoyed FP, but I would encourage any potential resident to really examine the attributes of the field or specialty to which they aspire.

Its amazing how many psychiatrists are doing this as their second specialty--I don't know if there are any studies, but I doubt any other specialty has this same degree of second-residency applicants. I'm double boarded too, and I know FPs, internists, OBs, a couple of neurosurgeons, even a urologist who went on to train in psych! Some because they really wanted to do psych, but wanted "to practise real medicine" first as one internist told me. Invariably, they weren't happy in their first specialty. Interestingly, the reverse traffic from psych to boarding in other specialties is low.
