Does anyone have any thoughts on this program?
Haven't heard much about it... since I'm not from that region...

any opinions would be appreciated.

thanks!!

I am biased but I am a big fan of Wake Forest. The faculty there are great people and seem very willing to help you get what you want after you are done training. I did an away rotation there and found the program to be very benign IMHO. They are constantly improving the facilities with new ICU towers going up and hiring new faculty. Dr. Meredith is the most approachable chairman I have met and Dr. Chang is a also very personable. They try very hard to stick to the 80 hr work week. If there is a downside, it is the town of Winston-Salem. Definately not a singles place, but very livable if you are married. No great airport access for weekend trips. Like I said, this is a very rosy picture and would enjoy other people's input.

they probably forgot to mention that almost 25% of their residents have quit over the last 16 months.

I thought the program was pretty good, esp vascular surg. Drs. Meredith, Chang, and Albertson were great and the residents seemed nice. I just couldn't see myself living in W-S for 7 years. Not an awesome town.

they're great until you become one of their minions.

why do you think that so many residents dropped out recently?
i thought the national attrition rate was about 20% anyways?

thanks 🙂

back in the day there was a lot of OR time once u started pgy3. then they had to comply with 80 hrs and refused to hire any NPs to help with the scut, so a lot of it was shifted to pgy3 and pgy4. so now it's really top heavy and u do a lot of floor stuff without the payoff of OR time later on. plus there they started getting fellows, which also took away good cases. plus it's a real boy's club. there isn't a single female attending. people will put up with abuse if they get what they want in the end, but over the years the carrot has gotten smaller and the whip has gotten bigger.

When I interviewed there several years ago, one of their older attendings shared his opinion (to a large, mixed-gender group of interviewees) that women really shouldn't be surgeons.

when i asked about the attrition rate the response i got was "well they were all females"

Not true, some were male. There is coincidentally a 3rd year female there who is rumored to be currently 'considering quitting.'
