any feedback?🙂
i know the location is not great, but overall is it top/mid/low-tier program?how competitive is it? do they take IMGs?
Disclaimer: I am biased. I have been at Wake for 9 years.
That said, I see the pros and the cons. The aren't too many of the later as far as I am concerned, but everyone's perspective is shaped by who they are. While you have heard the location isn't great, a complaint I have heard before, I personally disagree. Some say Winston isn't the best place to be single. I can see where they are coming from, however I met my wife while living here. Others say there is nothing to do. It is 4-5 hours from the beach. 1-2 hours from the mountains. Asheville is amazing. Chapel Hill and Raleigh are 1.5 hours east. Charlotte is 1.5 hours south. It is in the middle of everything. The city wasn't so great when I moved here. A lot of the business in town (banking, tobacco, and textiles) were leaving or had left, but things are changing. The arts are thriving. The school is in the process of developing what would be the nation's largest urban research park. The hospital has a new CEO with a great vision. It seems like there is a new restaurant or bar opening every month. That said, Winston is not, nor will it ever be Manhattan. It is a good small to medium sized city that is growing even during a time of economic downturn. The school is great, and the anesthesia department is top notch. The chair of 3 years is Hopkins trained, double boarded in Peds and Gas. The editor-in-chief of Anesthesiology is on faculty. There is a commitment to education both in the classroom and OR. Regional and OB are very strong. They have trauma, good pump numbers, strong neuro. They are balanced and most importantly the residents are very happy. There are a number research opportunities, but it certainly isn't leading the nation in NIH research dollars. I feel there is a strong family feel. My best endorsement is the truth: My match list (we'll see what happens on Thursday) was structured to leave.... 9 years is a long time anywhere and I want to see how things are done in other places, but my goal is to come back after my training. We'll see if it in the cards. Is this the perfect place for everyone, no... but it is for many.
I hope this helps. Let me know if you have further questions.
how do you know they received 900+ applications? is this kind of statistics available somewhere on the internet in relation to other programs?
