I was crusing around the Texas Board of Pharmacy website and stumbled on the proposed regulations slated to go into effect soon. I thought this was was rather interesting.

H.E.B. Grocery Store Pharmacy apparently has a test pharmacy performing central prescription processing with a increased ratio of pharmacy technicians. The Texas Boeard of Pharmacy has a new rule that would create a new class of pharmacy and allow for an increased ratio of pharmacists to pharmacy technicians/trainees of 1:5. This new class would be a Central Prescription Drug or Medication Order Processing Pharmacy.

It isn't just Walgreens POWER program anymore. From what I have seen and read I think this is going to be the new standard in a few years. I think every chain will have some sort of central filling facility.

Wow, first off, great find. Second, this sux for all of us. I'm more on the hospital side of things, but if retail tanks that will undoubtedly affect hospital salaries/openings to some degree as well. We really need to stop all this before the only pharmacist that has work is Tom Ryan, and all he does is have his hand duct taped to the space bar to 'verify' the 14 million Rx orders that CVSgreens has to do for the day.

Also Mountain, is that a Jayhawk in your avatar, and if so did you go to KU?

Most of the pharmacists down in Texas know what the state board of pharmacy is. The only question is how much are they being paid.

That doesn't necessarily mean they're all going to be as shiftless and detrimental to the profession as POWER. Just most of them, unfortunately. Wegman's also has a central fill program, but each of their pharmacies are still stocked with multiple pharmacists (the one by my house at the moment has 5 or 6 pharmacists employed, and I actually see people getting counseled there whenever I go). It's going to come down to the business model. Are they doing it because they want to squeeze every cent of profit out of their business as possible, or are they actually looking to streamline things for the pharmacist and make their working conditions more conducive to doing a good job?
