Why are the textbooks I see people walking around with always organic chemistry, physics, anatomy & physiology etc. Can't you guys just keep it in your bag?

Walking a distance with an anatomy or ochem text in a sling bag or backpack is really heavy. Have you tried it? It's actually more comfortable when the textbook is carried by hand.

Because being pre-med is a fashion statement. It's a "look at me, I'm smart and cool!" sort of thing.

It's not that hard to put a text book in your bookbag. That's what a bookbag is for.

Seconded. I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt and assume pragmatism over pretension until proven otherwise.

There are other many other textbooks that are as big as those, but I never see them.

I carry all my textbooks by hand because by the time I have my computer, its charger, all of my packets of notes, snacks, notecards, etc. in my bag, there is no room for books. :-\

Out of all those things, textbooks are the easiest to carry outside of my bag.

My physiology book last semester was the size of a small paperback book so that was really nice for a change. 🙂

Yeah I spent four years walking around with pieces of paper in my hands. Worked out decently.

Such as what subjects? Pre-health prereq courses have the biggest classes so you're going to see more people with their texts.

I personally hate the feeling of 10 pounds worth of textbooks digging into my shoulders, and a textbook in a slingbag messes with posture because it distributes weight unevenly.

Never noticed this. TBH, I don't see why you would bring a textbook to class anyway. Are you planning on reading while the professor lectures? I guess it makes sense if you have a break in between classes or something.

a better question is, why do you even waste your time caring?

does someone carrying around a book make you feel that repulsive that you have to make a thread about it?

I've never brought my texts to class either, but some people like to take their books somewhere else (library, etc) to study.

Burn SIZZLE BURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :meanie:

have we considered the facts that

a) very few subjects have big books outside the sciences
b) very few subjects outside premed/science requires extensive studying in the library to which you would carry your books
c) nobody else cares enough to study that hard

This. In what other field is a 3.7 gpa only considered average? lol pre meds are the only ones who care enough for the most part

I never carried things by hands.. books.. notebook... crazy thing.. thats what bookpacks are made for.

Definitely agree with a, haha....

In my first bachelor's, government, my books were no more than 200-300 pages, and they were often quality paperback sized, not hardcover/bound. I could probably fit every single book for 4 or 5 classes in a small backpack. A lot of classes didn't even have books because there was no textbook for what was being taught, one class that was like that was Political Islam, the "text" was a packet of readings we had to buy for like $50.

I did this because it was hard to understand my orgo professor. I figured I would just use class time to study the same subject that's being lectured.

Examples that come first to mind: financial accounting, calculus (yes, premed but also a very general course). I'm taking a class now in classical literature of China and that text is pretty darn fat.

Why do you waste your time caring about what I "care" about?

Fair enough.

I don't necessarily care about your judgemental behavior. What I care about is that you're posting a topic that has really no substance in this subsection of SDN. Other than the fact that you find it annoying that people walk around with books, is it that big of a deal? Panties in a tangle?

Post in general discussion next time.

i enjoy you posting immediately after your own /thread

during college, i usually walked around with a difficult science textbook in each hand.....usually my Cell Biology book ("The Cell"...humongous book that is badass btw) and my Neurobiology book. Because that still wasn't cool enough for me, I also purchased a clear backpack. I would purposely have the title of the next most difficult book (Immunology or Organic Chemistry or something) facing outward so everyone could stare in awe and think how amazing I must be. The best part is that I carried books for classes I wasn't even taking at that time because it was soo cool and made me look like a genius. That and, like stated above, it got me tons of ladies.

*the above story is completely false*...but i've seen it happen. minus the clear backpack lol.

I've never carried around any textbook at class, FWIW, and never really noticed people doing this. I don't really have an opinion.

Now if you're carrying some huge physiology textbook unnecessarily and wearing a X SOM shirt or something, I might be a little concerned.

Don't forget to include some condoms in the front pouch of that clear backpack... you want the ladies to get the right kind of impression.

Yeah sometimes you have to carry around books. I have a back pack but I usually have my laptop in it and another book. My organic book is the largest of all of my textbooks and will not fit in my bag. So sometimes I just have to carry it. It's not as cool as it looks. Haha

i just assumed you guys would have guessed i carried my magnums there lol.

nice add 👍

Agreed... most other classes I've had do not require you to bring text books to class. I have needed the book for many of my science courses since the professors often refer to charts or specific problems. I carry a messenger bag, and it kills my shoulder and bruises my leg if I put a heavy book in there (and don't tell me to get a regular backpack... I've had them and they hurt just as badly.. and rolling backpacks just aren't practical when every one of my science courses is upstairs). I'll put the other textbooks in my bag usually because they are typically half as thick/heavy (and cost $100-$200 less... lame).

Why do people care what other people do? Unless it's disruptive or directly affecting you in some way, you are just being annoying by complaining about stupid ****.

I sometimes carry my textbooks because they're heavy and I have a bad back.

I don't want to crush my laptop, and because I can use it in self-defense in case some crazies attack me. jk jk 😛

orgo books increase swag by at least 1000 percent...there is a paper on it but i lost the citation

the same reason I walk around campus in scrubs with a stethoscope around my neck. the ladies need to know I'm going to med school.

I carried The Blind Watchmaker for 4 years. I figured it would help get me LORs from science teachers.

At some point I feel they would switch from "Wow, that's taking some initiative!" to "Goddamn, 4 years and he's still working on it? What grade level does that idiot read on?"

some probably to show off how learned they are....most because their backpack is already too full 👍

lol, take a look at your avatar!

Well, would you rather carry a sociology textbook? I'd style those science textbooks anytime.

As someone mentioned in some other thread, the typical premed and the typical med student are oddly very different. When you think premed you think ******* gunner that does nothing but study in the library alone and socially incompetent. Fortunately, those kids don't get in (or maybe they change?) in med school. Don't get me wrong, every kid in med school is smart and highly motivated but the way they go about it day to day is completely different then THAT TYPICAL PREMED from undergrad. I mean you'll see someone like that in every class but the majority of them aren't like that. Makes you wonder where they were during undergrad? Probably having fun AND not advertising that they're premed. Any you other med students feel/notice this?

Why not just get a rolling bag? That is what I use and I was able to fit my Ochem book, laptop, and all my notebooks, etc in it. And to one of the above posters, not just pre meds care about a high GPA. You DO know it is harder to get into vet school and many, many graduate programs than it is to get into med school, right?

vet school is definitely difficult to get into. what other ones are more difficult than med school?

Well, as one example, a couple of the clinical psych PhD programs have less than a 1 percent acceptance rate. Think about it... Most PhD programs have less than 10 spots, especially in science PhDs. When you have thousands of applicants, the competition will be fierce. Med school is not the be all, end all of the world.
