Any long-time Walmart Pharmacists know if you can also work (part-time or per diem) for another pharmacy grocery chains or other chains like Rite Aid or Costco, etc...while working for Walmart. I am presumming that Walgreens and CVS would be out of the picture as they are their major competitors. Thank you for sharing, guys.

I am not a long-time WM pharmacist. However, my boss works FT for another company and picks some shifts at WM on occasion.

When I worked at WM as a tech 5 years ago, their FT people had to sign something saying that they would not work for a competitor within their local area. So, they might have been able to work in another town if it was far enough away. You'd have to look at that agreement to see what is and is not allowed. Beware that it may not be a nationally standardized thing.

when i was intern at VA i knew a FT pharmacist there and he worked part time at walmart

I had a friend that worked for walmart recently and he wasn't allowed to do retail relief for another retail chain but could work per diem hospital.

I would presume someone could work for a retail chain and LTC (like Omnicare) simultaneously too with no conflict... anyone have any experience with that?

Generally, you can work for retail, hospital, LTC, Home infusion, Nuclear while working FT at another type of pharmacy location.

I know most retail places will not allow you to work for another retail within a certain mileage....

Some will let you work for an independent though.

Best thing to do is ask your district manager if you really want to keep your job and work PT retail.

Generally, is it better to work for walmart than the regular chains like cvs and rite aid?

I have worked for Walgreens, Walmart and Target.

Yes, it is better to work for Walmart than CVS and Walgreens!

Walmart 1) Is OVER staffed. I was a summer intern in 2011 and the store always have 2 to 3 pharmacists, 4+ techs (and ME), and 2 or 3 cashiers. I have NEVER seen a Walmart pharmacist go to the cash register at all b/c we have so many techs and cashiers! We are so over staffed that I get bored sometimes on my internship. 2) Pharmacists get to leave for lunch since there is more than 1 pharmacist on duty they each take turns for lunch. If there are only 1 pharmacist available then the pharmacy closes for 30 mins for lunch. NO LUNCH for CVS and Walgreens pharmacist. Open all day 1 tech only. 🙄 3) Walmart is the richest company in the world. Talk about job security. 4) NO DRIVE THRU!!!! I need to underline this b/c it's a HUGE bonus!

I worked for Walgreens 1) Understaffed like crazy. ONLY me and 1 pharmacist period. 2) No lunch. No breaks. 3) Drive thru sucks! BOO!

Don't know about Walmart but having interned for walgreens for 3 years, what is said certainly was true at my store. Drive thru is the devil! IPPE showed me CVS is even worse. Although my rotation at target was better, it was still way too brain dead for me to consider as a long term career option, oh and their computer system is like DOS for those of you who even know what that was, same goes for CVS.

Before you get too excited about Walmart pharmacy being overstaffed compared to WAG or CVS, you have to realize that more does not necessarily mean better quality.

There is a major problem with the way Walmart reward it's motivated techs/clerks from the lazy ones, which is it does NOT. Basically, no matter how fast or efficient techs/clerks work, they do not get rewarded with promotion to higher status (ex., senior techs at WAG) and higher pay. So even if they work their ass off, at the end of the two weeks, they get paid the same as those who chat all the time, listen to music at work, shop at Walmart.com for personal purchases, play poker on cell phone while counting pills, visit restroom 5-6x/shift, or simply take their sweet time counting each pill or bill.

I have heard countless complaints from hard-working techs at stores I floated to. Many of them are actively looking to switch to a company that would pay them more, while the bad ones stay with Walmart and just do the minimum to keep their jobs. This is probably why Walmart HAS to hire so many helps, because raising the pays of the good staffs is beyond the company's wildest imagination.

Trust me, it is very frustrating as a RPh to be stuck with staffs who do not give the least damn about the pharmacy. Guess who will the DM go after if the pharmacy is performing worse than expected (hint: not the techs or clerks).

With so much staffing at Walmart, is the pharmacist lucky enough to never have to deal with insurance billing issues.

I spent a whopping 30 minutes on the phone with an insurance company for just one patient alone because our computer system seriously needed a major update and my techs did not know what to do either. I had to wait until a more experienced tech to arrive to point out what was wrong. At the same time, my workflow was so backed up that it haunted me for the rest of the morning.

I once floated to a store and noticed that a prescriptiion had been sitting in Troubleshoot for a week already. A doctor prescribed a glucometer, but nobody cared enough to call the insurance company or to try each brand to find out what was covered. I simply entered Freestyle on my first attempt and it went right through. So yeah, it does not matter how overstaffed a pharmacy is. Nothing will get down if nobody cares.

when i was at wally world, there were just too many hands in the cookie jar.....u dont know what was going on with 1/2 the prescriptions......if there aren't notes written, then u are better off just starting from scratch.....then u have a bunch of crap in troubleshoot and no one wants to do them because their mentality is someone else will get to it

being mgr in a pharmacy with less help, at least u can track down who did what.....u are involved with more of the rx's coming in and going out.....and there's more accountability

just give me 1 clerk 7 days a week and i'll have it made

They NEVER have to get the cash resigter....this is however very untrue for Walgreens pharmacist. 🙁

Ugh...yes, they have to, especially if they are working at those new 12-12 neighborhood market stores.

What else would you say about Walmart, to someone who has never worked there, but is considering it? You do not have to do immunizations do you? Do they handle hourly vs exempt pharmacists differently?

If you wanna join Wally World now, be ready to be frustrated over and fighting other new hires for hours. None of the new hires in my district this year gets 40 hrs/week. Some don't even get enough to qualify for benefits. To make matter worse, our system is set up the way that you cannot simply become buddy-buddy with a pharmacy manager and he will look for you whenever his store has extra hours available. No, if you want to pick up extra hours than what is already assigned to you, you are at the mercy of the scheduler in your market. And if you wanna get hours from a different market, your request has to be approved by the market supervisors first. The process can be really annoying. And don't even dream about overtime. Wallymart abhors giving out overtime hours, unless it really has no alternatives. The company would rather overhire and not give pharmacists enough hours than to alllow them to work overttime.

Neighorhood market stores are the new mini-Walmart. A pharmacist there works 60 hours per two week cycle.

30 to 32 hrs a week is the perfect number for me. Why would anyone want more than that? I don't.

How many hours do you need to get/keep your medical benefits? How are the benefits?

I recently heard Walmart fired a pharmacist in Houston this month for working after hours as a prostitute.

completely un-related to the topic... but did you guys actually upload a cover letter when applying for walmart grad intern jobs? =D
