Date of submission: Expected June 4th, 2025 (Or whenever it opens)
Overall GPA: 3.93
Science GPA: 3.92
Bio-Chem-Physics GPA: 3.95
DAT score (include AA and all sections): TS: 25 AA: 23 OC: 27 GC: 25 BIO: 25 QR: 18 PAT: 19 RC: 20
State of Residence:
Washington (Maybe GA. See description below)
Undergrad Attended: Brigham Young University
Major: Microbiology
Minor: N/A
Minority? No
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? No
Shadowing Experience: 150 hrs from 4 different general practices, actively shadowing now. I also shadowed for 80 hours in the PICU at Cincinnati Children's Hospital but don't know if it's worth including that.
Volunteering Experience: 80 hours working with special needs kids to develop social and motor skills. 35 hours administering vitals to Assisted Living Home Residents. 200 hours organizing service events and doing volunteer administrative work for BYU's Service Program. 50 hours assisting kids whose parents only speak Spanish to read and interact at their elementary schools. 30 hours teaching CPR to local Spanish speaking communities. 25 hours making mats for refugees to sleep on. I also served a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where I served immigrants and other minority groups for over 1000+ hours.
Employment: 200 hrs CNA at an assisted living facility where, among other things, I monitored the oral health of patients and administered antiseptic mouth washes and other interventions.
Research: 1000+ hours. Pediatric Sepsis Research at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, 0 publications. Craniofacial Trauma Research at University of Utah 1 publication. Macrophage Suicide Gene Research BYU 1 publication.
Other Extracurriculars: Program Director of service program that serves kids with special needs in the community. Member of service council for the largest student lead service organization in the country, planned large scale events. Biochem TA 2 semesters.
Have you volunteered/shadowed/attended events at any dental schools? No but I would love some suggestions of some events I can attend. Especially those in the southeast.
Relevant Honors or Awards: Presidents Volunteer Service Award, Utah Lt Governor's Service Award
LOR type and strength: 2 Faculty letters, both of whom are research mentors and I also was a TA for one of them. 1 dentist letter who I shadowed for 60+ hours. 1 from Service program director letter who knows me really well.
Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags:
I am fluent in Spanish and want this to be a major part of my application. What should I do to show that I used that skill? Also, my wife is a GA resident and both her parents live in GA so I was wondering if I would be considered an in-state applicant if I applied to DCG? I was pre-med for a while, so is there anything that I need to do to strengthen my application for DS application specifically?
School list (in ranked order):
UNC, DCG, UConn, UF, UCSF, Stonybrook, Harvard, Meharry, Columbia, UWashington, UPenn, Roseman

why UF?
why meharry?
why not Utah?

My wife’s family lives in Northern Atlanta and she is pregnant right now so we want to be close to her family for support through dental school.

Also, Utah is usually antagonistic to BYU students

do you know that meharry is an hbcu?

have you checked the OOS acceptance rate at the publics you are applying to?

that's shocking to hear that about utah...

I was not. Thanks for bringing that up. I'll probably replace it U Tennessee.

I have. I know the odds aren't great. Are there any other safety schools I should apply to or am I not qualified to apply to any of the state schools on my list?

Yeah it's really unfortunate

UNC, UCSF, Harvard, Columbia, UPenn- 4 of the top 8 or so most difficult to get into schools in the US (outside of the TX schools)
UConn- prob in the top 10-14
UF, Stonybrook,- very very competitive for OOS spots
UTenn, DCG- probably less competitive for OOS spots, but still not easy
UWashington- your IS and likely your best chance

Roseman- your only safety school
as you know, your stats are very good, but your school list is pretty challenging
you will likely get interviews, but it's hard to predict where
you need to show mission fit for the schools to get invites and acceptances

Honestly, I just really want to go to school in the southeast to make the 4 years easier on my wife. What if I added a couple of schools like U Kentucky, U Louisville, U Alabama and take Upenn and Columbia off the list?

still hard to say
you'll get interest, it's just difficult to know from where and how much
you will likely get at least a few invites, possibly more
"make the 4 years easier on my wife" is not mission fit...

If you're going to the ADEA GoDental Fair in a few weeks, reach out to any reps from the Southeast schools. With your metrics, you'll earn attention, and BYU has always been a strong exporter of solid dental students.

I think your suggestions to consider UAB, Louisville, and Kentucky are good. Would you consider Florida schools (UF, LECOM, NovaSE)? I don't know about MUSC. Connect with DCG admissions about your domicility via marriage. If you don't want to live in the Northeast, take all the Northeast schools off.

That’s a great idea and I would love to attend the GoDental fair but don’t know if I can make it as I wasn’t planning on it. Is it worth attending the virtual one? Also, what else can I do to connect with admissions officer so I can get recruited?

I think Florida schools are a good idea. I’ll definitely apply. I am not opposed to the idea of living in northeast if it’s the right fit, but UNC is by far my dream school. What can I do to give myself every chance to get in?
