Hello! I was hoping to get some input and advice on whether I should add or remove any schools, this will be my first time applying and I'm worried that my stats and application are too "average" and don't stand out. I'm trying to finalize a list of schools soon but am also having trouble doing that. I plan to apply broadly but Rutgers, UCSF, UCLA, and UPenn are my top choices. Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you in advance

Date of submission: Hoping for sometime from mid-June-early July

Overall GPA: 3.80
Science GPA: 3.78
DAT score (include AA and all sections): QR: 520 (26), RC: 400 (20.5), BIO: 440 (21), GC: 440 (21), OC: 440 (20.5), TS: 440 (20.5), PAT: 440 (20.5), AA: 450 (21.5)
State of Residence: CA/NJ

Major: Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology
Minor: Global Health
Minority?: No? I'm Korean American
Reapplicant? No
Nontrad? Yes, I've spent the last two years working as a high school science teacher in South Central LA through Teach for America.

Shadowing Experience: Around 400 hours with general/ortho, 100 with an endodontist
Volunteering Experience: Around 250 hours, Volunteered for mobile dental clinics in impoverished areas of Costa Rica, coordinated podiatric clinics for homeless populations in Los Angeles, volunteered for food banks and Operation Smile
Employment: Full time school science teacher, worked at a private dental clinic for a year before that. A lot of office and front desk work, some chairside assisting.

Research: Worked on a group research project about disparities in oral healthcare and early childhood caries, and worked for a lab at Rutgers in high school but otherwise not much experience
LOR type and strength: 2 from undergrad professors at UCLA (one physics and one cell biology) , one from the dentist I worked for, one from my supervisor as a teacher (all are probably about average, maybe a bit above average)
Misc Info/Things not stated elsewhere/Red Flags:
-
Have one “withdrawn” course from junior year
- Took a course for undergrads offered by UCLA, learning from dental schools about the field and working in their lab to create an impression
- Worked as an editor and writer for UCLA's newspaper for 3 years, mostly wrote for Sports and a bit for Arts
- As a teacher, I've helped organize events and opportunities for students and their families to get resources and access to healthcare
- Involved in Greek Life & was the Philanthropy chair for my fraternity, organized foster and adoption events on campus and raised over $1000 for our cause (Movember)

School list (as of now): UCLA, UCSF, Rutgers, UPenn, UoP, BU, Tufts, Columbia, OHSU, Washington, Michigan, UPitt, Maryland, UConn, Minnesota, Colorado, Temple, UNLV, UNC

Thinking about adding Western, VCU, Utah

You'll probably be fine. I'd only apply to your state schools. Those private schools like Columbia and Penn cost 600k+ which is way too expensive.

korean is an ORM
legally, you can only be a resident of one state...

I've lived in California for the past 5 years since starting college, but I'm thinking about moving back home to NJ for a year starting this fall, should've clarified that

Your non-trad with real world experience so I feel like you won't be as naive as most pre dents. Don't get so lost in trying to get any acceptance. You need to be tactful in choosing a school that is actually affordable. Most of the schools you listed are 500k+. Dentist starting salaries are 120-140k. Look into HPSP and NHSC too.

so you won't be a NJ resident when you apply...

how did you come up with this list?

Why are you moving back to NJ? Is it because your TFA contract ends?

Getting into a California school is tough fo in-state applicants, but I'd give you props for teaching in resource-constrained LA schools. I don't have a problem if you applied to California schools since your time working with an underserved population will give you some looks. Are you bringing in a Segal Award or similar?

Yeah I'm leaving the teaching profession and moving back would save me a lot of money, my Segal award was used for my teaching education unfortunately

you get interview invites and acceptances if you have mission fit with a school, and secondarily geography gets taken into account
"location, opportunities to specialize and research" are not mission fit

your GPAs are above the matriculant averages for all dental schools (3.55)
but your DATs are at the matriculant averages for all dental schools (20.5)
have you looked at the averages and 5/95 for the schools you are applying to?

they're schools that I would want to attend based on location, opportunities to specialize and research, etc. and I've been trying to factor in cost as well
