Hello 🙂 I am looking to get advice on what to improve and how realistic my chances are.

Overall GPA: 3.025
Last 45 around 3.5
I have a low gpa but good grades in certain classes like A+ microbio and lab, A+ comparative vertebrate organology, A in zoo biology etc. I explained why my grades are low in my explanation statement and at the bottom here.

Currently retaking genetics to try and boost my prereq and science gpa, then may retake a different class or take animal nutrition after. It is just hard because I am working full time at a VCA hospital as a vet assistant and scribe, so I can only manage one class outside of work.

Total hours:

  • Animal Experience (no veterinarian involved): total of 1,344 hours
    • 72 hours at a wildlife rescue
    • 90 hours with large (farm) and small animals at a vet who does research (I was doing animal husbandry without vet supervision)

I have awards from high school like varsity scholar athlete and academic letter plus certificate of academic achievement, but nothing from college unfortunately.

I have three letters of rec, one from a professor I learned veterinary Spanish from outside of class, my research mentor, and one of the veterinarians at my job.

TW: SA my first year of college was difficult because of COVID, then second year I was raped on campus. This had a tremendous impact on my mental health and grades but I’m hoping schools will see I recovered and had an upward trend.

Hi! Do you have any in-state schools? What schools are you looking into? What does your pre-req GPA look like? I think the fact your last 45 is high shows a good academic trend. Schools will absolutely take your explanatory statement into account when looking at your application.

Some schools will weigh GPA differently, so it is important to note which schools will give you the best chance based off of their application review procedures.
