Hi, I'm feeling a bit anxious about this cycle and would like an honest reality check. I'm a first-time applicant, MD only, ORM, currently in my second gap year. Haven't heard from 19/23 of my schools, and I worry the problem is my stats. If I end up needing to re-apply, is that what I should focus on? Is my list too reach-y? Thank you guys <3

Welcome to the forums.

State of residence? How did you come up with this list? (Duke? Hopkins? state publics???)

With your low sGPA, why didn't you apply to DO schools? You aren't guaranteed to be a reapplicant, but why aren't you hedging your chances? You do have two interviews, so we'll have to see how it goes.

What is your purpose as a physician? What was your non-clinical volunteering that demonstrates service orientation? Details matter, especially with activities that show your willingness and comfort to be out of your comfort zone.

Did you do an NIH IRTA? What did your prehealth advisors there and your undergrad institution say to you?

Hi, thank you for your reply!
State of Res - VA, applied to all VA schools

School choices/Purpose - I'm very interested in EM and biomedical research, so I targeted Lvl1 trauma centers and schools with good research, mostly on the east coast (I'd prefer to stay closer to home and in a city if possible). Some of these are big reaches, I know.

re. DO - I chose a career in medicine somewhat late, during senior year of undergrad, so I didn't get a lot of undergrad pre-health advising. I didn't realize I would need a DO recommendation or shadowing hours until late in the game, so I decided to prioritize other things on my app rather than befriending a DO doc just to apply to those schools.

Volunteering - A good chunk of it was as the music director for a philanthropic a cappella group in college, we sang for retirement homes and at a children's hospital, and raised money for different charities. Now, I teach kids at the NIH Children's Inn. Music is a huge part of my life and my favorite way to connect to community.

And yes, I am doing the NIH IRTA. The prehealth advisors there haven't been very helpful, imo. They have limited availability, didn't give me a good sense of what I need to do to round out my app, and gave very little feedback on my personal statement.

I wouldn't say that your stats are too low for MD schools, but that your MCAT is too low for many of the schools on your this-year's list.
(UVA, Vanderbilt, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Emory)

If you end up reapplying you need a list that fits your stats better.
