Hi everyone! Looking for opinions on my school list/what schools to add and chances at a PA school 🙂 I’m a bit insecure about the number of hours because I feel like everyone else has so many more hours (I’m a trad applicant that finished in 3 years- so right now is a gap year). I also don’t have an MD or DO letter of rec.

  1. cGPA: 3.89
  2. MCAT: 513 (127/127/130/129)
  3. PA resident
  4. ORM F
  5. State school
  6. Clinical experience: 550 hours paid Nurse’s aide at psych ward
    1. 50ish hours hospice volunteer
  7. Research: 120 hours pathology lab (no pubs)
  8. Shadowing: 40 hours between psych and family med
  9. Non clinical volunteering: 60 crisis text
    1. 70ish at a children’s after school program
  10. ECs: 120 hours as the VP of a pre-health club
    1. 150 hours TA for 3 courses
    2. Member of a board game club
  11. Hobbies: art (just self taught, not anything professional but thought I would put it on there)

Welcome to the forums. Where did you grow up in Pennsylvania.

Fortunately you have quite a number of in-state options for PA. You should include LECOM and PCOM, both of whom have a ton of seats available, especially for Pennsylvania students. LECOM will definitely be interested if you grew up outside of the major cities of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh (DUQCOM is new and is in Pittsburgh).

You are missing service orientation activities, and if you decide to graduate early and take a gap year, you will have plenty of time to rack up 150 hours before you submit your application. We want food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation. Crisis text line is not an in-person activity, so it won't help you stand out (everyone likes the convenience post-COVID); but it should get you into a better position to work in a shelter perhaps as a counselor.

While you won't need a physician letter unless required by the schools on your list, you need to lock down your references and find out if your undergrad has a prehealth committee letter process to follow.
