No interview invites so far 🙁 placed on hold by GW. What are my chances of getting an interview this cycle? I’m really interested in derm or PM&R; are there any other schools I should consider applying to?

Is your only non-clinical community service your association with your temple (40 hours at submission)? Most schools generally screen out applicants with fewer than 150 hours of service orientation activities such as food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation. I would wait for the DO schools to respond by spring. I also have no sense of your purpose as a physician from your description.

I am beginning to volunteer at a food bank next month but those 40 hrs are all I have currently. I primarily wrote about cultural competence and concordance through my job at the clinic, serving culturally diverse communities and addressing mental health disparities in the Asian community specifically. I also had severe eczema throughout college and it was super hard finding effective treatments to the point where I have been on every FDA-approved treatment for eczema. In turn though I became really passionate about researching eczema and integrative med and that’s ultimately what I did my honors thesis on. If I’m able to get my non clinicals up, do I still have a shot at MD?

What is your plan to get your non-clinicals up? I think you could have a shot at MD or DO, but I'm unsure about your mission fit. Dermatology is still one of the most competitive specialties, so I'm not sure that saying "you want to be a dermatologist" will endear you to the schools on your list that have a strong community health/service focus or the DO schools. I'll let others chime in.

If you have any suggestions concerning upping non-clinicals, please let me know! I was originally in an accelerated BS/MD program and the pace was super aggressive, and while I should’ve prioritized volunteering it was something that was swept under the rug. And yeah understandable about the mission. I’m really split between the derm interest and the primary care/serving cultural communities that I’m being exposed to right now. I did talk about my experience in primary care and integrative medicine pretty extensively in my secondaries.

Are you still in play for your BS/MD? Your metrics shouldn't exclude you from their process (unless there's something else I don't know). I presume that they did want you to volunteer though.

Save the “I want to be a dermatologist“ until the first day of medical school and then be prepared to truly run and gun against all of the AOA competition.
