Hi there,

I'm hoping to get advice on if I have a realistic shot at MD this cycle. I've been agonizing over my 511 MCAT since taking it, as my full length average was 517. Decided not to retake, but regretting it out of fear. Afraid MCAT will leave my app DOA for many schools (I realize this may be neurotic but concerned over ORM status). Thank you for your time and thoughts!

  1. 3.94 cGPA, 3.9 sGPA
  2. 511 MCAT (130 C/P, 126 CARS, 127 B/B, 128 P/S)

  6. Undergrad: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
  7. 500 hours clinical experience as a nurse's aide
  8. 700+ hours research in asthma/immunology and colorectal cancer. 2 (upcoming) publications, expected in September (Frontiers Immunology)
  9. 60 hours shadowing: interventional radiology, family medicine, anesthesia, infectious disease, orthopedic surgery
  10. 200+ hours volunteering with socioeconomically underserved youth, specifically with children from single-parent households (mentorship role)
  11. Gap year will be spent as a nurse's aide while doing part-time research at the same asthma/immunology lab
  12. PBK member
  13. Strong PS narrative, strong letters of recommendation

Welcome to the forums.

Michigan in-state will be an advantage, but I'm concerned your non-clinical volunteering does not have enough service orientation based on your description of "mentoring." You don't have enough for many of the Jesuit schools like Loyola, Creighton, and Georgetown. You need 150 hours of food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, legal support, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation or your file may be screened out at most schools. I don't have a strong sense of why you want to be a physician from what you have given us.

Loyola, Creighton, St. Louis and Georgetown expect far more non clinical volunteering than you have. You are fine to apply this week and submit all your secondaries by August. I suggest these schools with your stats:
