hello everyone, i just got my mcat score back and i am super disappointed. its a 511 (127/128/127/129) with a past score of 498 this time last year.

  1. 3.95 cGPA and sGPA
  2. 498 (126/124/123/125) and 511 (127/128/127/129)
  3. State: MA
  4. Ethnicity: ORM, white (Armenian) woman
  5. Undergraduate institution: UMass Amherst
  6. Clinical: CNA - 240 hours in nursing homes, about 300 hours as a personal PCA (ongoing). Medical assistant in a dermatology and internal medicine office- currently around 730 hours, will be about 2,000 by the time i matriculate. Hospital Volunteer - 48 Hours
  7. Research experience: ~700 hours over 3 years working in a breast cancer research lab on campus. 2 poster presentations and honors thesis written on this research.
  8. Shadowing experience: 90 hours with pediatric infectious disease, gynecology, and internal medicine.
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: Around 100 hours armenian association volunteering, 200 hours volunteering in daycare
  10. Other extracurricular activities: TA for a biochem course, had food service jobs at starbucks and chipotle
  11. Awards: mass high demand Scholarship, Dean's List every sem, was in the honors college at my institution
i dont have a school list as of yet but i do want to apply to all schools in MA (except harvard cuz thats a long shot) and preferably stay in the northeast. my question is what are my chances with this MCAT score? are my experiences weak/ should i restudy to take it a third time? i am super disheartened as i studied for about 9 months and had a 514/515 average, which was what i was hoping for. any advice would be super appreciated.

What does your non clinical volunteering involve ?
I am involved in a non-profit organization called the armenian youth federation which is centered around building up the armenian community locally and throughout the diaspora through fundraisers and events. i also volunteered in a local day care for multiple summers. i dont have much other than that

You should accumulate 150+ hours of non clinical volunteering such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc. before you submit your application. Otherwise, you could be screened out at some schools. I suggest these schools if you accumulate those hours:
UMass
Tufts
Boston University
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Albany
New York Medical College
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
George Washington
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
Wake Forest
NOVA MD
Belmont
Tulane
Alice Walton
TCU
Creighton
Rosalind Franklin
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
Wayne State
Ponce (St.Louis)
Roseman
Methodist (when it opens)

You'll need service orientation activities: food distribution, shelter volunteer, job/tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation. I'm sure being part of a cultural affinity group is important to you, and that may help you with scholarships.

You should have 150 hours of the above activities when you submit your application to avoid getting screened out at most schools. Schools will often average MCAT attempts for screening, but your 511 will likely given more weight. Include DO schools since your result would make you desirable and competitive with them. If you want to stay in the Northeast, you have UNE and NYCOM at least.

Thank you so much for your help and for the specific opportunities!! do you think working in a food bank over the weekends will be favorable, or should i find something more specific and relatable to the rest of my app (my focus is armenian heritage, women, and children)?

Working at the food bank would be ideal.
