22M, white, graduated recently from a FL state school.

4.0 GPA, 525 MCAT

Clinical experience: ~500 hours as a patient care tech in the hospital. (Planning to work full time as an EMT during this year).

Research: ~400 hours nutrition/metabolism. 2 poster presentations, and 2 pubs currently submitted for review where I am a secondary author.

Volunteering: 60 hours with Habitat for Humanity, 80 more anticipated in the next couple months. (I understand volunteering hours are certainly the weak point of my app).

Shadowing: 40 hours, 3 different doctors

Other:
80 hours teaching/mentoring younger students in a research-related course for two semesters.
~1000 hours non-clinical work experience (children’s summer camps and also worked at a boat marina).
Was involved with a few clubs, although just as a general member.

I feel that my PS and writing are somewhat above average.

THANK YOU ALL!!!

Welcome to the forums.

I think you would get yield protected from all of your safeties. What is your mission fit with them?

Get more hours with Habitat.

You can put in more reaches. I mean you have the stats, but i need your mission fit.

Many of these OOS emphasized primary care, and as of now going into pediatrics is my goal. Additionally, for USC-Greenville I liked their notes on the importance of lifestyle medicine, which for me was a major takeaway from my research experience.

How prevalent is yield protection? Would it be wise to switch my current OOS options with higher ranked schools like Ohio State, Pitt, Penn state, etc.? I just feel that I need to have a handful of OOS on my list that aren’t just T10-T20.

Thanks again.

Yield protection is real with your stats. Apply to all your Florida MD schools and I suggest these OOS schools:
Duke
Emory
U Virginia
Johns Hopkins (free tuition)
U Penn
Jefferson
Pittsburgh
Hofstra
Einstein (free tuition)
Mount Sinai
NYU (free tuition)
Columbia
Cornell
Rochester
Dartmouth
Brown
Tufts
Boston University
Cincinnati
U Michigan
Northwestern
Washington University
Vanderbilt
Colorado
Your low non clinical volunteering hours (some schools screen at 150 hours) will limit your chances for interviews but your GPA of 4.0 and MCAT of 525 will attract attention at some schools.

Thanks for your input. Ideally I would like to stay in the Southeast and avoid a huge city like NYC or DC, if possible. Is the South, outside of my home state of Florida of course, more or less out of the question due to yield protection other than a few private schools like Emory and Vanderbilt?

Southern/Southeastern public schools generally favor in-state applicants because they want physicians to stay in the South (look up the workforce challenges to understand). You have listed the usual suspects among Southeastern privates in good-sized cities, however you wish to define them. And there are more: Belmont of course is in Nashville. Tulane is in New Orleans. Louisville is also southern, and one can argue St. Louis is southern (WashU, SLU, Ponce-MO). The problem is that there just aren't that many. (Like Atlanta and New Orleans are larger than most of your "big" Southern cities... kinda like a Miami/Orlando/Tampa.) Wake Forest and Duke should be included.

As someone who is matriculating at USC-Greenville (but FL Resident), they do look for ties to the state of South Carolina (many of the OOS students went to undergrad @ Clemson, USC, or Furman). However, there are a few people with minimal/no ties to South Carolina matriculating, hope that helps!
