Hi there! I had posted in this thread about 1- 1.5 years ago, and I have since grown my application and would love to hear what you all think! 🙂 I decided my junior year of college, after shadowing a veterinarian, that this is the field I wanted to be in, so I have built all of my hours the past 2 years!

22 yr/F/ NY resident, graduated undergrad 2019
Applying: Cornell, Virginia, Midwestern, Western, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, LMU, Florida

Overall GPA: 3.5 (I had some bad grades my freshman year-I had 2 deaths in the family within the span of a month)
Science GPA: 3.6
Last 45 GPA: 3.7-3.8

GRE (Q/V/W): 146/149/3.5 (I am retaking this in the spring! I do not think I studied smart for this test the first time around, so this time I have purchased the Magoosh online study course, and have been following it daily!)

Veterinary experience: 2,600 total (hopefully 2,740 with shadowing an LA vet pending COVID-19, marine mammal course being rescheduled)

50 hrs: shadowing small animal veterinarian (while in college)
50 hrs: shadowing small animal veterinarian (while in college)
2,500 hrs: unlicensed vet tech/receptionist (I call myself an assistant, but I'm referred to as a tech at the hospital) working with small animal, exotics, and having opportunities to go into acupuncture appts, emergencies, etc.

**pending COVID-19**: shadowing a large animal veterinarian (realistically will probably get about 50-100 hrs in before applications are due)
**pending COVID-19**: week long marine mammal medicine course, cancelled last minute, hoping it is rescheduled 🙁

Animal experience: 700 hrs total (900 if pet sitting counts)
300 hrs: animal care volunteer at a science center working with aquatics and reptiles
300 hrs: Volunteer, then intern at a wildlife rehabilitation center
50 hrs: Volunteer at a horse center
50 hrs: Kennel volunteer at animal shelter
(if schools count this) 300 hrs (as of right now): pet sitting (my own business) a lot of these pets are patients at the hospital I work at, and I am hired to do things such as being a trusted pet sitter to give medications, or pets with severe behavioral issues

Research: None

Employment (outside of vet med):
5 years working for a small company, became company manager at 18 yrs old, after working full time while in school for 2 years. (left job when I transferred to a 4 year school)
8 months as an unlicensed pharmacy technician (the field definitely was not for me, but I learned a lot!)
6 months: Subway (worked part time while in college-ended position when I graduated)
1 year: library assistant while at school (8 hrs/week)
1 year: intramural sports assistant (8 hrs/week)

Extra curricular:
-Student Government: 4 yrs, become President at my university senior year
-Volunteered at the school food pantry 3 hrs/week senior year
-Alternative breaks (senior year): the trip I went on was focused on Animal Welfare, we traveled to Forest Animal Rescue in Florida and built a capuchin monkey enclosure!
Student-Athlete for the cross country team: Junior-Senior year
-Volunteer at school blood drives (20 hrs)
-Volunteer at community meals in my college town (10 hrs)
-President's Student Advisory Committee (1 yr) I was nominated due to being SGA President
-Alumni Council (I was required to be present at meetings as student voice being SGA President)
VSCSA (vermont state colleges student association) Secretary for 2 years
-Chair person/lead coordinator of Casino Night 2 years in a row (an annual formal fundraising event at the college that raises money for the United Way-each year we raised roughly $1,500)
-Dress for Success: an event I created and put on on campus my senior year (kind of as my final thank you to my school) at this event I gathered donations of business attire for college students, hired a photographer to take LinkedIn head shots, had a makeup artist and hair stylist there to teach students how to apply makeup/ do hair for the professional world, a resume work shop, mock interviews, give aways, and I created a Senior Scholarship with the SGA budget to give an IPAD to a graduating senior (I was not allowed to give $$ away) -honestly my favorite thing I have ever created/accomplished to date. Seeing how excited and grateful students were seriously felt so good. I even saw some of the suits that were donated worn my students at my graduation a month later 🙂

Awards:
- Presidents List
-Deans List
-NAC All-Academic Honors team
- Martha DePecol Scholarship: given to 1 student/year who shows a promise of making a difference in the world
-Carrie Hubbard Steward Scholarship: given to a hardworking female student who has to work her way through college
- Student Association Outstanding Student Award: there was a huge speech at an event when this award was given-pretty much I was awarded this for the major impact I had on campus at my 4 year school
-Student Life Community Service Award: I was awarded this by faculty for my huge impact on my campus and college town, and for having the highest number of volunteer/service hours on campus.
-Presidential Leadership Award: given to students who are leaders on campus, while maintaining a high GPA

Anyways, this is me going into applications, this cycle! I would love some input on if I am making a smart decision on the schools I am choosing to apply to (I have put a lot of thought into this list, but would love some opinions on my choices based on grades, experience, etc), and what recommendations you have to help me strengthen my application in the mean time.

I feel like you're a good candidate for Illinois. You're honestly a far stronger candidate than I was and you remind me lot of our class of 2023 SAVMA rep!

If you have specific Illinois question, let us know!!

Oh my gosh I was honestly hoping you would comment on this, @bensenecal! I always enjoy reading the advice you give to prospective students on this website! Illinois is one of my top choices, so that makes me really excited to have you say that! 🙂

Not a problem!! Hope we see you next February for interview day!! 😀

I think you will have a good chance with LMU! They have a holistic approach in choosing their candidates & your application is very well-rounded in my opinion. If you have questions about LMU, PM me & I would be happy to help!
