Hello everyone! I'm a sophomore studying for a Bachelor's in Biology with a concentration in Zoology in Texas, hoping to apply to vet schools next cycle! (Jan 2026) I am trying to see where I could potentially improve my chances at being a competitive applicant. My dream school is Texas A&M College Station, but I plan on applying to as many schools that I meet the requirements of. TIA!! <3

Cumulative GPA: 4.0
Science GPA: 4.0
Last 45: 4.0

I will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Biology with a concentration in Zoology in Spring 2027

Veterinary Experience:
- ~200 hours shadowing a shelter med associate veterinarian
- ~550 hours as a surgical veterinary assistant @ an animal shelter clinic
- ~400 hours as a veterinary technician assistant at a GP
- ~1500+ hours as a veterinary technician @ a small animal/exotics urgent care animal hospital (current job, should have around 3000 hours when I apply next cycle!)
- ~10 hours shadowing at an equine hospital (this will be happening on march 10th of this year! once i go there, they said i can schedule more visits to shadow so hopefully, this will increase as well!)

Animal Experience:
- ~ 90 hours volunteering at the humane society, did everything from feeding, dog walking, to volunteering in the surgical clinic
- ~8 hours volunteering at a wildlife & rescue rehab center! (i just started doing this so i will continue to get more hours this year)

Research Experience:
- ongoing research project on Drosophila in my genetics class
- i have tried signing up for research with two professors on my campus but they never email back 🙁

Awards/scholarships:
- Dean's list every semester I have attended thus far (4 semesters at this moment)
- Achiever Promise Scholarship

High school awards:
- Principal’s Honor Award x4
- Biology Blackhawks Awards
- Global Studies Blackhawks Awards
- Bear Grit Award
- National Hispanic Recognition Program

Extracurriculars:
- National Honors Society
- JV Cheerleader (Highschool)
- Student Council Secretary (Highschool)
- Pre-Veterinary Society Founder/President at my Uni
- Pre-Health club member
- HPAC (Health Professions Advisory Committee) Member

Employment:
- I have done nails since 2020 working full time to part time (employed by me)
- I have also sold crafts over the years? Im not sure if this counts

I am trying to be preemptive and figure out where I can improve now so that I can work on any and all things you all recommend me before the application cycle opens next year. I am also seeking any advice on the TMDSAS application system as I know nothing about it.

I think you’ll probably be fine, especially if Texas is your in-state. Keep your grades up as you finish your coursework. Your vet hours are good with good variety especially if you can keep upping the equine hours. Research is a nice feather in the cap if you can get it but I wouldn’t stress about it if you don’t have that given the competitiveness of your GPA and other experiences. Maybe some more volunteerism wouldn’t hurt but not at the expense of your GPA or vet experiences.

I will be volunteering with a low-cost vaccine clinic a few times this year as well! Should I aim to do non-animal volunteer opportunities? Thank you for your feedback; I really really appreciate it. 🙂

Giving back to the community is never a bad thing. I’d just find something you enjoy, whether that’s related to vet med or helping people in other ways. I don’t think it will make or break your app in any way, but it’s nice to see that people have lives outside of vet med too. GPA and vet experiences are going to be a bigger part of an app, but if you’re doing okay there you can consider beefing up those other areas too.

Your stats are amazing and will make you competitive at any school. Honestly the only thing I think you could improve on is doing more volunteering, maybe not in vet med, but it seems you have already thought about that. Good luck!

Edit: Also maybe try some non-school related extracurriculars, like rock climbing or some type of art (ceramics, painting, etc)

I play video games, read books, and I also create/edit digital media? Would these be good non-school related extracurriculars? Thank you for the advice! I will look into some non-animal volunteering.

I believe they mean participating in those hobbies via some club or activity, e.g. an esports or book club.

But she said non-school related activities? So i'm not sure if I am misunderstanding her.

You can count clubs and activities both in and out of school. I like to stream on twitch and for my birthday 3 years ago, I held a 12 hour livestream to raise money for PAWS Philly. I counted the hours as volunteering. I included my volunteer work through my church as well from middle to high school.

You can include hobbies that have nothing to do with school. They like to see who you are as a person rather than just a pre-vet

Yes, I included video games, reading, and art on my application. They don’t have to be associated with an organization at all, any hobbies or anything you spend a meaningful amount of time on should be included. This is how they get a complete picture of who you are, and they want to see what you do outside of work/school to relax and handle stress

I meant either! I included doing ceramics- both in a club and on my own time and doing things on my own like legos and other artsy stuff

But the video games and editing you should put on your app
