Hi all! I am trying to create a school list right now (applying 25-26 cycle) and would love some feedback -- Slightly worried about my extracurriculars but I believe I have developed a theme for my app and just wanted some advice on how best I can frame it! Currently, a third-year graduating this spring; taking a gap year, and planning on getting a clinical job. My main concern is that since I graduated early, I have less extensive experience. All the hours are what I expect by June!

1. Demographics
ORM
, first-gen immigrant, moved at a relatively young age, recent citizen
CA resident
T20
cGPA: 4.0
sGPA: 4.0
MCAT: 527 (132/131/132/132)

2. Research Experience
~1800
hrs, basic science cancer lab, work on a few independent projects, done one poster and one presentation, aiming for another poster before graduating, possibly put on "in submission" publication for a high-impact journal for my mentor's paper
~600 hrs, clinical research position, performing lit reviews and recruiting/screening patients to enroll in studies, have had patient encounters, 1 publication

3. Immigrant Related Research
~250
hrs, study immigration from a legal perspective and analyze the immigration court system, work with a well-known academic lawyer
~200 hrs, research with mentor in public health school collaborating with a nonprofit looking at cases of workplace violence for immigrants, have not done too much work here but aiming at trying to be more involved the rest of this year

4. Clinical Experience
~800
hrs, clinical volunteer through a club, leadership position, direct hands-on patient interaction performing medical procedures
~200 hrs, medical assistant for a private practice clinic, taking medical histories, presenting to the physician
~100 hrs, Have around 40 right now but am going to continue visiting clinics in the next few months
~TBD gap year clinical job

4. Non-Clinical Experience
250 hrs
, human rights program/initiative, write for program's magazine, stories all revolve around migration's connection with global health, also virtually shadow medical evaluation for recent refugees, leadership position

250 hrs, collaborated with a refuge center, refugees must be enrolled in an English class within 3 months of their arrival, and in my area, these English classes are often full, so worked with refugee center to design my own virtual survival English course, also tutored migrants for the naturalization exam (during the same time frame I took my exam)

150 hrs, food bank, primarily serve migrant populations

100 hrs, English literacy coach for a public library, work with a migrant student who suffered a stroke, utilize aphasia treatment strategies within our sessions

TBD hrs, just started working with another nonprofit virtually tutoring village students from my city of birth in English, more so a passion project since I thought it would be super cool to use my mother tongue to teach English

5. Other
No awards, just the basic honors list stuff
~TBD hrs, working at a test prep startup
5000 hrs, very niche hobby, competed nationally in HS but now just mentor

LORS so far: one science, one non-science immigration lawyer faculty, clinical research doctor MD, wet lab PI MD PhD

Schools I have already:

I know I probably need more midtier schools and so this was just a rough list!

Thanks in advance, and happy holidays!

Obviously your metrics will make you a rock star. Align your list with

Sorry, they migrated to a new website, so their list of student-run asylum clinics and student chapters aren't accessible. Be picky and do your background research with PHR before you start. Don't apply to more than 30 schools; you should be able to call your shot if your work resonates with the PHR.

See if you can attend/volunteer at their upcoming conference in March.

Thank you so much for letting me know about this opportunity!! Just to clarify, you recommend I look at schools that have an existing chapter such that my interests align and have that be a factor in selecting the schools I choose to apply to? Likewise, a question I had was about tutoring in terms of non-clinical volunteering. I know you usually mention it as a generic pre-med activity and was wondering whether you recommend I try to find other types in the coming few months!

West Virginia admits few non residents with no connection to the state or region. Remove Albany and Wake Forest since they will "yield protect" with your stats. You should receive several interviews from the other schools on your list.

Any stretch opportunity (out of your comfort zone) serving non-refugees (since that will be most of the patients you will encounter in your training until you hit specific fellowship/residency opportunities) when it comes to social services for food distribution, shelter volunteering, job/tax preparation, transportation services, or housing rehabilitation would help, though I suspect you already have much of this affecting refugee communities already.

I would not recommend more tutoring or teaching hours; you already have demonstrated academic competency.

It's easier to look at schools with existing chapters. I linked you with their national leadership roster to give you an idea of different schools that have chapters. That said, you want to make sure you note all clinical opportunities. You aren't there just to be a chapter leader... you're going to become a physician, so don't overlook the clinical opportunities you want to prepare you for the next step ahead, including student research or advocacy.

It doesn't hurt to get your name/face out there to network with other current students whose interests share yours. Hope you can go to the national conference in March.
