I am a Canadian citizen and resident, re-applicant.
3.99 GPA, 518 MCAT.
Some research (1 school publication and poster), good non-clinical volunteering including some overseas in impoverished areas. Shadowing in Italy of approx. 100 hours in a hospital, including viewing of a kidney transplant. Some volunteer hours in the ER (more assisting nursing intake than actual shadowing). Teaching at an MCAT prep course.
My SO is from the New England area so I am looking mainly on the east coast. I don't want to have to rush getting married at this point. The main schools I will be applying to are:
Dartmouth, BU, NYU, Tufts, NYMC, SUNY Upstate, Icahn, etc.
Last cycle I had an interview and was wait-listed at NYU, but then ultimately rejected. I was on the wait list for an interview at Albert Einstein until they determined that they can't take international students any more.
I am going to try to get more shadowing this summer and aim to have applications done by mid-August so that I can include the new shadowing & volunteer work that I am doing.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Albert Einstein’s md/phd takes Canadians and the MD program will take Canadians next cycle again. I asked them.

NYU doesn’t take Canadians anymore. I would apply to more schools. I know a Canadian which got into Maryland with a 3.7 gpa and a 507 mcat orm.
I had thought it was just NYULI that didn't take internationals. Oh well, another one off the list. I will look at Maryland though. Thanks.

Why don’t you move to an easy Canadian province as back up. With your stats, you can get into a bunch of schools as IP

OP has a SO situation, and how many provinces have a 'bunch of medical schools' aside from Ontario? Quebec isn't feasible if OP isn't francophone and Alberta only has two. Really doesnt merit moving.

OP, you gotta get to that letter writer. Is your application not 'complete' (ie. you don't meet minimum letter requirement) without this rec? your application depends on it. It's getting late and that's double bad for an international.

Sask,Manitoba or the maritimes would be really easy for op to get into with those stats. Moving to New Brunswick opens up dal, memorial and the Quebec schools for op.

I am not sure that you fully understand the residency requirements for Canadian schools. Most are 2 years. I am applying to Alberta and Calgary and a few others, but schools set aside a large portion of their spots for residents of their province. Also, there are no schools that are easy to get into. More and more applicants have masters degrees with the accompanying research publications etc. The stats show that it takes on average 3 cycles for Canadian applicants to get accepted to Canadian med school.

I live in Ontario. 3.95/518. Eight publications. Tons of leadership/ volunteering/ doctor shadowing/hospital internship/international experience. Applied for all Ontario schools for two years. Rejected pre- and post-interview by all Ontario schools for two years.

Very frustrating: one of my references hasn't submitted the letter yet, so still not complete.
I am in a similar situation. One of my recommendation letters has not arrived yet (I first contacted her in April). I called and emailed her many times. Every time she promised that she would do this asap, but she never did. Finally three days ago I changed the letter status to “No Longer Being Sent". I also asked for one more recommendation letter from someone else and he uploaded the letter last weekend (one week after my request). I called several schools before and after all these. Some of them told me that they would not review my file until all the letters they would expect to receive are received (even the min # of letters they require is satisfied). Some other schools told me that my files were already transferred to committee because even without this letter, my application satisfied the min # of letters required by these schools. But I am not sure if my files being in committee means they will process my case. I am also not sure if changing the letter state to "No Longer Being Sent" and sending a new letter will put me to the bottom in their review lists. I feel your pain and frustration.

She has promised by Monday at the latest. She is my reference for my major, so kind of important!

Only two Ontario schools give you points for high mcat scores. Uoft and queens it is just a cut off. What is your cars score?

128 at the time when I applied. But I re-took MCAT in May 2019 and got 131 this time.

I am worried if it is too late for us (I just marked "No Longer Sent" on one letter and added another letter a few days ago) due to the rolling admission of U.S. schools. I checked one school I applied for, they already sent out 882 IIs. My file is probably at the bottom of the pile of applications (because the status of the recommendation letters) waiting for the committee review. And we are not U.S. applicants!

Did you apply late last year? You have very good stats and you should have been landed somewhere last year.

I was pretty late last year because of indecision on my part. This year I was ready by Labour day, but now I’m looking at 3 weeks later than I wanted because of letters

Edit: on the plus side, I haven’t been part of the first wave of R’s!

Are you me? I also got tired of waiting for my LOR since she was delaying it for so long after false promises and I asked someone else who sent it within a week. As if we don't have enough bs to deal with as Canadians, sigh. Hope our stats pull us through at least :xf:

Oh, boy! What a coincidence! When was your new letter submitted? Mine was quite late (last week) after I finally realized she would never keep the promise.

Mine was a bit earlier. I'm cool with both DO and MD though and the DO cycle runs much later so I not too stressed. Btw did you apply for DO schools?

FINALLY complete. Had to cancel a letter (I have given up waiting, even though they said it would be done 'any day' many times), but means that I am a month later than anticipated. 🙁

Last year was end of October, but I also had a letter issue. One of my referees couldn’t figure out the whole ‘must be on official letterhead’ thing. I didn’t find out until December, although some schools marked me complete without it.

Not all schools require letterhead. I guess it was just because you submitted too late last year. It is so unfortunate for Canadian applicants, early submission is more crucial than Americans. A friend of mine who is a U.S. citizen submitted the secondaries around the deadlines of many schools last year. Even she just had an average stats, she still ended up being accepted from the wait list of an ivy school. But for Canadians, there would be not much chances for November submissions.

I am in a similar situation as you this year, The only difference is I was two weeks earlier than you when I marked "no longer sent" for a recommendation letter and had a new letter sent. Unfortunately I have not received any II yet. I do wish you a good luck this year.
