Hi Everyone!

I have officially submitted my application for the class of 2030 and wanted to know what my chances are at the schools I applied to. I am a 21F, traditional/first-time applicant with a passion for mixed large animal medicine, specifically with theriogenology! I'm from Michigan, but I currently go to school in Ohio for undergrad.

Cumulative GPA: 3.92
science GPA: 3.93
last 45: ~3.9

Any degrees achieved

I will have a bachelor's degree in animal science in May of 2026! I also have a biology and chemistry minor in addition to being a part of my university's honor program.

GRE results: N/A

Veterinary Experience:

- ~1,600 hours small animal/exotic GP
- ~600 hours Equine/Food animal ambulatory GP
~ I have ~ 150 hours spread between wildlife and some animal handling courses offered at my university.

Animal Experience:
- ~1,100 hours as a dog day care attendant during high school.
- ~200 hours spread between barn duties at my university and various classes I've taken as well

Research Experience:
- I am a part of 2 research groups, one studies how the water quality impacts a variety of Macroinvertebrate populations, and the other studies the impact road salt has on local waterways (I'm from a very cold state). These have totaled ~150-200 hours.

Awards/scholarships:
- Trustee scholarship from my university ($21,000 in tuition a year)
-Dean's list every semester
- A sportsmanship award from when I was a senior in high school, which awarded me a $500 scholarship.
- A few more minor ones.

Extracurriculars:
- Vice-President of my university's Pre-Vet and Beekeeping Club
- Treasurer for my university's honors student association (before this, I was its secretary), pre-vet club (before vice president), plant club, and beekeeping club (also before VP).
- Resident Assistant

Employment:
-
Content Tutor
- Physics TA

I have applied to Michigan State (my IS), tOSU, Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin, Tennessee, Auburn, Florida, & Colorado. The reason I'm anxious/concerned is that Michigan State rejected a friend of mine (her IS too) with very similar stats last year, and that does not make me hopeful for myself. I was wondering what my chances are at the OOS schools I have applied to, because those might be my saving grace if history repeats itself (hopefully not). If there is anything else you need, please let me know because I am more than happy to answer!

Thank you all!

I’ll be surprised if you don’t get in somewhere. But admissions can be unpredictable. If you don’t get in this cycle I’d encourage you to critically evaluate your essays and your references to see if there’s some deficit there.

With your stats I probably would have considered applying to the OOS places that let you change residency after the first year and thus tend to be cheaper, but what’s done is done for this year. But you have good grades, good experience with multiple fields represented, a bonus of a little research…all things places want to see.

Fully agree with everything Jayna said, I just wanted to add in that your friend may not have done well in her interview, might not have had great essays/letters, etc. Seeing people with similar or higher stats get rejected can be rattling, and while stats matter a lot, the subjective portions of an application matter a lot too. Michigan State's interview process was weird for me as an applicant many years ago and is still weird for me as an occasional interviewer now. Start prepping (for interviews at all schools) now, interviews can be make or break for any school.

based on your experience description, i think we went to the same undergrad institution and im a current first year at UTCVM. you definitely have more leadership experience than i did and we have similar vet hours. i also had the same GPA. with that said, i was accepted to many schools last cycle. from your list: tOSU (IS; originally waitlisted but pulled off), wisconsin, tennessee, and offered interview with illinois but decided to decline. i also interviewed with purdue and auburn but was rejected after the fact. so i think you definitely have a good chance as long as you interview well and write well. i will say im not the best writer or interviewer yet i still pulled it off LOL so dont panic if you think you didn’t do as well as you hoped!
