Hello Everyone!

Last year I was looking for advice after performing horribly during my undergrad due to terrible studying techniques and my mental health (lost a lot of friends and family members during undergrad). I followed @Goro advice for reinvention by completing a DIY postbacc with 30 credits of upper division science courses (Immuno, Histology, Human Phys, etc..)

Current Stats: 3.0 cGPA, 2.9 sGPA, 3.85 pbGPA. (I know that 2.9 gpa will probably get me screened out)

Im a URM (East African) from Las Vegas, Nevada

3200+ clinical hours (Work at a hospital + volunteer hours)
415 hrs as a ER Research Assistant
220 hrs Non-clinical volunteering
50hrs shadowing various specialties (many DO, including at an OMM clinic lol)

5 LORs so far. 1 coming from a DO who's an Adcom @TUNCOM

I understand its hard to predict without an MCAT score so I will update when i take the test. I've taken 2 kaplan FLs and received 505 and 507 if that helps lol. My test date is in June.

Is MD and/or DO possible? Thanks for the help

Yes, depending upon your MCAT.
East African as in Ethiopian, Kenyan or Somali?

Have UNLV and TUNCOM at the top of your list. From what I heard interview day TUN really likes in state applicants.

They’re def at the top of my list, UNR and HBCU’s too. Any other schools I should look at in particular? Or are most DO schools receptive towards reinvention?

I don't know if Eritreans count as URM. Wise @gyngyn?

Skip HBCs if you do not have any evidence of service to communities of color.

When DO schools say they have a requirement of a 3.0 gpa (both cGPA & sGPA) is there any wiggle room with that? Will they automatically screen you out?

There's always wiggle room, even at Harvard
