Looking for some genuine feedback on programs worth targeting. US MD student, I will be applying in the 2027-28 cycle, as I am currently on a research year (outside of home institution). Just got step 2 score back with a 250. While I am grateful for this score--unfortunately that standard deviation is, quite real, and I scored below the median of my practice exams. I have honored around half of my rotations, high-passed the rest during clerkship year. I aspire for a surgeon-scientist career, and therefore am very interested in university-affiliated, academic programs that match well for fellowship (open to a wide range of fellowship options).
However, as I look at admit.org, I see that medians are all much higher than this number for academic, university-affiliated General Surgery programs. Would anyone be able to advise where I may not get screened out?
