What were the results of your previous applications? Where did you grow up in California? What is your mission fit? Why so little community service? There's no compelling reason I have to want to interview you based on what has been provided so filling in the details will be very helpful.

I applied to the school list I provided above and got no II. I was born and lived near San Francisco for a little, but grew up in Southern California. My mission is to help underserved communities, support patients with a holistic point of view, focusing on mental health, and a career of continuous research-based learning. As of my lack of community service hours, I prioritized school work too much during college and didn't realize the importance of community service too. I have been trying to make up the community service in my gap year, but just got the research position along with my EMT job so it is hard to find time.

For someone in their second gap year, your experiences are relatively very lacking.

Your shadowing is focused in a subspecialty of IM, which may not be favorably be looked upon by medical schools since they want 50+ hours of shadowing in primary care, such as FM/IM/Pediatrics.

250 hours in community service is relatively lacking for someone that took two years off in the viewpoint of medical schools. To break it down, it would be about 125 hours per year, hence about 2 hours week, which is very low overall in the wider scope. An acquaintance of mine who took two years to get a masters and applied was recently rejected from most medical schools due to a similar reason, albeit they had a slightly higher MCAT score.

I recognize that being an EMT had really odd scheduled hours and perhaps random calls onto work, but it may appear to medical schools that you did not use your two years productively, especially given these experience hour breakdowns. This doesn’t mean you won’t get in anywhere, but for UC schools that are known to be hyper-competitive, you will be at a significant disadvantage with no mission-fit that I can see
