Hi everyone, I've been searching information for international student applying for veterinary school. In addition to this, I would like to ask for your suggestions based on my stats and the Animal Nutrition course required by couple universities. My university didn't offer this course, should I take the internet course? Also, I didn't take two lower-division courses, Physics and Chemistry Lab, is missing two of them a critical issue for applying veterinary school? ( As a exchange student for one semester, I earned 142 credits in 7 semesters, what a nightmare...)

Applying (primary interest): Texas A&M, North Carolina, Purdue, and Washington
Applying (secondary): UC Davis, Missouri, and Tuskegee

Cumulative GPA: 3.64
Last 45 GPA: 4.0

GRE (Q/V/W): 153/167/3.0

Degree:
- Summer 2019: B.S. in Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology (aka Medical Tech?)

Veterinary Experience:
- Start working as a full time veterinary assistant this September

Animal Experience:
- 100+ hrs shadowing at animal hospital (most of them are small animals)

Extracurricular:
- Volunteering in rural area veterinary services in HOTAC

Research:
- 450+ hrs of research of structural and functional study of primosomal proteins from S. aureus

Non-Animal Employment:
- Five months of full time internship in outpatient laboratory in hospital

Honors and Awards:
- Scholarship of ministry of education for exchange student in 2017
- Annual Medical Laboratory Forum student competition, awarded to third place.

LOR:
- President from current animal hospital
- Advisor from my home university (also vice president for academic affairs)
- Another LOR will be written by the president of future animal hospital

I really appreciate everyone's patience and support and sorry for my poor writing skills. I'll try to get as much veterinary experience as I can, but is there any other animal experience you would recommend or any suggestion?

When do you plan to apply? If you won't have any vet supervised hours before September 2019, then you'd be best served to wait and apply September 2020.

Many people have to take the online version of animal nutrition and several universities offer it (Oklahoma State is definitely one that offers it). You need to check directly with the schools that you plan to apply to regarding the physics and chemistry labs. I've included a link for NC State (they offer several suggestions for where to take the animal nutrition course). From a quick look, most schools, including NC State and Purdue, do require the physics and chemistry labs. Typically the only way out of labs for general chemistry and physics is if you have Advanced Placement credits.

Again, your best bet is to directly contact each school. Have a copy of your transcript ready to share with them and course descriptions as well (especially if your undergrad was not located in the USA). That will help them determine how your courses match up with their pre-req's.

If possible, try to get varied veterinary experience. Most schools like to see that you have been exposed to multiple areas of veterinary medicine. If your upcoming job is mainly small animal, try to find a large animal vet to shadow with on your days off. Or a shelter to volunteer at on the weekends.

Your gpa's and GRE scores are very good. Work on developing a positive relationship with the vets at your upcoming job so that they will be able to write strong letters of recommendation for you (another important piece of the application process). Best of luck to you!

If you were shadowing a vet, it’s vet experience, not animal experience. If no vet was present, it’s animal experience. I assume at an animal hospital, it would have been shadowing a vet and therefore vet experience.

Thanks for your reply! It's mentored by professional veterinarians, thanks a lot!

Thanks for your suggestions! I'll contact to the admissions division directly, thanks again for your advice! Missing those classes are definitely a shortage, I'll try to get various kind of vet experience to make up for the missing lower-division courses.

Hey I'm also an international student. I'm from Shanghai and applying this cycle! I am an undergraduate from UC Davis🙂

Hi I'm also an international student! I am applying this round (2020-2021). How's everything going for you?

Same here! My undergrad was in a Hong Kong university and am currently an Illinois resident. To some schools I'm international applicant, others in/out-of-state. How's it going for you? What schools are you applying to?
