1. I have a 3.23 cGPA and 3.25 sGPA

2. 2 prior MCAT attempts, 496 -> 502 (4 months later, both in 2021). Retaking in 3 weeks, anticipating a 510 but attempting for a higher score still. Last aamc practice test was a 511 (126,128,130,127)

3. Just moved to CA this last october from ohio before. So not sure what state of residency I am for applications. Either CA or limbo
4. White
5. Small Private school in ohio
6. I was a EMT during undergrad with around 4k hours. I have been a surgical neurophysiologist since getting my undergrad in neuroscience and biology with about 7k hours.
7. I have four years of research in undergrad in the neuroscience department with around 2k-3k hours. Publications include a thesis and two poster presentations.
8. No shadowing experience yet. Expected to have have 20-30 hours soon
9. Few hundred hours teaching martial arts in an after-school highschool program which included special needs kids. 200-300 teaching salvation army workers martial arts. Assisted in teaching local law enforcement martial arts also around 300-400 hours.
10. 15 years of martial arts

12. One really strong LOR from a neurosurgeon. Another strong LOR from a ortho spine surgeon that's also teaches at a few of the medical schools near me and said he would put in a good word to admissions.

Your GPA and MCAT should be ok for DO.

What have you done for shadowing? I'm assuming your job has been in the realm of patient contact. I'd say you could have a little variety in your volunteer experiences including things outside your comfort zone.

I think you have a decent shot. I guess my question would could you still retain your Ohio residency because OUHCOM is a great DO school and it would be easier to apply instate. California has a ton of applicants so can’t bank on getting love even with the Ortho reaching out with those stats. Not that it’s impossible but if you could get into OUHCOM then that would be awesome.

I think you’ve got a decent chance to get in somewhere. Apply. If you can apply as an Ohio resident then I would do that.

MCAT for CA DO schools are relatively higher than other DO schools around the country. You moved to one of the worse state to apply to medical school. Average matriculant MCAT stats is approaching 513. its lower for DO schools, but higher than your current MCAT. You likely have to attend med school in another state.

It's hard to tell without your new MCAT score. Try to hit >505 and chances are you will get in somewhere.
