WAMC Low GPA Non-trad

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you for your service! It will be difficult with the science GPA for MD schools, but it was a good idea for you to take classes to get over the 3.0 cut-off at most DO schools. Where did you apply last cycle?

Definitely add into your application about your disadvantaged background this time around. You can try the following schools:

Wisconsin
MCW
VCU
EVMS
UVA
USUHS
East Tennessee
USF
Western Michigan
Drexel
Hackensack
Nova MD
V Tech
Quinnipiac
Vermont

For DO:
AZCOM
CCOM (above two have high tuition fyi)
TUNCOM
KCU-COM (they had a higher cut-off before but may have removed that, so please double check)
ATSU-KCOM
WESTERN
TUCOM-CA
DMU-COM
MU-COM
CUSOM
PCOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
ACOM
UIWSOM

It will be tough as you said due to the opposite ends your MCAT and GPA are at, but you should receive interviews at some of these schools. You could take a year before applying to enroll in many more courses and show to schools how you are a different student. That might not work with your schedule though.

You need to be more upfront about your childhood and disadvantaged environment growing up. That may help a little. You also should connect with current or graduated students to see if there is someone who shares an upbringing with your own art the school.

You are competitive for all DO schools and I suggest these:
WESTERN
TUCOM-CA
TUNCOM
AZCOM
UIWSOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
ACOM
NYITCOM
Touro-NY
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
For MD schools I suggest these:
Medical College Wisconsin
U Wisconsin (if applying as a Wisconsin resident)
Loyola
Rush
Western Michigan
Wayne State
Oakland Beaumont
Creighton
TCU-UNT
Tulane
NOVA MD
Wake Forest
Virginia Commonwealth
Eastern Virginia
George Washington
Drexel
Temple
Penn State
Hackensack
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Dartmouth

Thank you for the replies and school lists. I didn't feel good about talking about my disadvantaged past because I feel very privileged in my current circumstance, and it just felt like I was trying to detract from my personal responsibility during my undergraduate years. But I have heard from many mentors that it's a necessary part of my story and I should include it.
Yes, resiliency is on the AAMC list for desirable attributes (competencies) for applicants. Describing your distance traveled is not the same as avoiding responsibility for your early problems; it provides a better context for them for you and for the evaluators. You also have a military background (thank you for your service) so that also helps your narrative.
