I got my MCAT score back, and I did not expect a 123 on my CARS section. Although I am feeling alright with my numbers, I am still interested in MD schools but I am worried about my low CARS score. I am wondering which schools I should apply to for MD, and maybe I can get away with applying to only NY DO schools or schools nearby? I am stubborn to apply this year, but are there any tips on how to approach the application cycle? How I can strengthen my application?

  1. cGPA: 3.7x sGPA: 3.7x
  2. 506 (128/123/129/126)
  3. NY
  4. Asian, low SES, Disadvantaged
  5. Ivy, Major: Biology
  6. Clinical Hours: 3000+ Scribe (projecting)
  7. Research Hours: 500+ basic science research (2 low/mid impact pubs, 3 posters/presentations)
  8. Shadowing Hours: 50 (primary care)
  9. Non-clinical volunteering Hours: 100+ Soup Kitchen (project)
  10. 3 Leadership roles (President and Vice President of 2 clubs, senior scribe)
  11. Honors: Cum Laude
  12. I speak 2 other languages (Spanish, Mandarin) if that makes a difference. Is it appropriate to mention my dyslexia diagnosis, and challenges I overcame?

Chances best at DO, I would recommend applying out of the area as well to avoid putting your eggs in so few baskets. How many scribing hours do you currently have? 1000? And did you mean the soup kitchen volunteering was part of a project or are you also projecting that?

I suggest these MD schools with your stats:
All 4 SUNYs
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Hackensack
Drexel
Temple
Jefferson
Penn State
George Washington
Eastern Virginia
Virginia Commonwealth
Wake Forest
NOVA MD
Tulane
TCU-UNT
Medical College Wisconsin
Oakland Beaumont
For DO schools I suggest these:
Touro-NY
NYITCOM
UNECOM
LECOM
PCOM
CUSOM
MU-COM
DMU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
KCU-COM
AZCOM
TUNCOM
WESTERN
TUCOM-CA

When were you diagnosed with dyslexia, and what are your GPA trends by year (overall/science)?

100 hours of soup kitchen community service is at the low end of satisfactory number for many schools, but it depends on your circumstances if you have had to work a lot to continue your education. I also will ask if you are projecting hours relative to... application or matriculation?

That said, if you went to any Ivy league or similar school, there are a lot of community outreach programs at the school, so I do have to ask what prevented you from taking advantage.
