Hey everyone, I need some help. I’m about to graduate college. I am a Biology major, taking a gap year. 3.1 cGPA, 280/3.5 GRE, I plan on taking the MCAT in June or July. 150 volunteer hours, 100 shadowing hours. I worked in both clinical and non-clinical fields — Teacher’s Assistant and UIC at an Emergency Dept. I’m Asian (Filipino) from AR. I applied to a Master’s Program in Biomedical sciences in hopes to help my application. But I was rejected.

I’ve been very busy with school since this is my last semester in college and I invested a lot of time in preparing my master’s program application. I’ve been planning to take the MCAT this June or July. But I feel that I am not ready to take it since I’ve been so busy. I am partial to osteopathic medicine and interested in getting into a DO school.

What should I do? Take another gap year? Try again with the post-bacc, or wait until next year or at least winter to take the MCAT? Take the MCAT this summer — If it’s a low MCAT (490-505), go ahead and try again and apply for a post-bacc? If it’s a decent MCAT (510-515), send my medical school application in the fall and hope for the best?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks y’all.

Do not take the MCAT until your practice scores are consistently over 505. If that does not occur until next winter then do a DIY post bacc at a local college in order to raise your cGPA and sGPA. Your GPA is low for DO schools so you will need a MCAT of at least 505 to compensate for that GPA of 3.1 .

Thanks for the reply. Do you think I should go ahead and apply to a DO school if I do well on the MCAT?
Or is the Post bacc a must?
Thank you.

Depends on what your MCAT score is and when it is available. Post your actual score here in the future. After November is too late to apply to DO schools.
