Hi SDN - looking for a little guidance on my school choice. I haven't received any II's yet (I know it's still early) but wondering if I should be adding more DO schools to the mix. Thank you!

1. cGPA: 3.36 / sGPA: 3.55
2. MCAT: 514 (128/129/127/130)
3. State of Residence: NY/IL (trying to have it both ways… lived in IL until moving to NY for postbac)
4. Ethnicity and/or race: Caucasian
5. Undergraduate institution or category: T25 Public University
6. Postbac instuitution: Top 10
7. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer):
   • Paid: 2,000 hours ED scribe
   • Volunteer: 120 hours of crisis text line, 300 hours of quality control volunteering at a large hospital
   • Volunteer: 80 hours in central America volunteering at a community health clinic
8. Research experience and productivity:
   • Volunteer: 300 hours as a research assistant on a public health study, interviewing young adults in the criminal justice system
9. Shadowing experience and specialties represented:
   • Emergency Medicine – all day every day as a scribe
10. Non-clinical volunteering:
    • After school tutoring at a local high school
11. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
    • Jobs:
      • Actuary at a large insurance company. High level statistics, data analysis, and data science experience. Management experience. Passed the first 6 very rigorous exams (they’re not as bad as the MCAT, but there are 10……) towards being a fully credentialed actuary.
      • Professional Tutor while completing my postbac. Taught a wide range of subjects and standardized test prep to a wide age range.
      • TA for an upper level computer science course during undergrad.
    • Athletics: member of the men’s club water polo team during my postbac, 10 hours per week of practice and tournaments around the state.
12. Relevant honors or awards:
    • A few dean’s lists, nothing special
13. Anything else not listed you think might be important:
    • Obviously a non-traditional applicant. I’m hoping I have a compelling story for wanting to switch tracks – basically that I was drawn to become an actuary from an interest in statistics, but what I lost along the way was using statistics and accrued knowledge for meaningful purpose, and to be directly in service of people rather than crunch the numbers in an office.

Hello! I have similar stats (higher MCAT, lower GPA) and am also a nontrad. I'm an engineer in the military. I applied this cycle to a mix of DO and MD programs, some of which you have listed. So far I have had a total of 4 DO II's and 3 MD II's resulting in 2 DO acceptances and 1 MD acceptance. So based on my experience I'd say your odds are good if you apply to a broad range of schools.

You could add some more DO schools such as MU-COM, DMU-COM, ATSU-KCOM and KCU-COM.
