2021 Cycle Results: 2 MD II, 1 DO --> 3 WL (Buffalo, Rosalind, DMU)
  • I haven't sent any updates/letters of intent or interest. I plan on sending a letter of intent to Buffalo here soon and a letter of interest to DMU (Rosalind doesn't accept anything). I know these probably won't move the needle, but I would like to at least known I tried.
Self-assessment: Applied first day AMCAS/AACOMAS. My writing was well thought out and reviewed by multiple peers (the W&A section could have been better). All secondaries were submitted <1 week after receiving. I thought my one in-person interview went excellent. My two online interviews I was not super happy with; I prefer to sit down face to face and have a conversation. Nevertheless, I come across as kind/personable.

Options moving forward (having decided to reapply):

1. Reapply this cycle: My application hasn't changed much. I continued to work as an ED Technician over the past year. I am also taking a microbiology and A&P course at a CC (8 credits @ 4.0). I would focus on improving my interview skills before the next interview season. I could possibly try to find a research position and shadow a few different specialties during the cycle. Also, I would have to reuse the same recommendation letters.

2. Take a gap year and reapply the following cycle: My MCAT will expire so I would have to retake. I would try to find a research position (which may be difficult considering my lack of experience). I would do some more volunteer work, improve my interview skills, etc.

3. Enroll in SMP: Would have to retake MCAT. Get involved with research at SMP. Improve interview skills, etc., etc..

What was your school list the last time? Or is the one you posted from that cycle?

You do not need an SMP. You have very limited non-clinical volunteering hours, especially to the underserved and what would be out of your comfort zone. Crisis text line is not really the kind of face-to-face interaction that broadens your world view. You have excellent clinical experience.

The current list you have posted would be good. Consider Creighton, Hackensack, and Touro NY as well. I think gaining non-clinical volunteering hours would be the best use of your time.

This was the school list I used last cycle. Thank you for the response!

Your GPA is not competitive for most MD schools. I suggest these MD schools if you reapply:
All 4 SUNYs
New York Medical College
Albany
Vermont
Quinnipiac
Hackensack
Penn State
Drexel
Temple
George Washington
NOVA MD
TCU-UNT
Creighton

Wayne State
Also apply broadly to DO schools and I suggest these:
Touro-NY

PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
MU-COM
WVSOM
DMU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
KCU-COM
UIWSOM
TUNCOM
AZCOM
UNECOM
WCU-COM

Are you on waitlists now given your the interviews? I still think you have a possible shot but not certain until after the CYMS season plays itself out. If they all were rejections after interviewing, I'd check on those interviewing skills for sure.
