Hi, I failed out (technically withdrew) from a DO school 5 years ago and I would appreciate any feedback of whether there's any path for me to get back in.

I failed out due to mental health issues that did not get diagnosed and treated appropriately until about a year ago. My original undergradute GPA was 3.26, with my sGPA being slightly higher. My MCAT score was a 34 on the old MCAT (94th percentile at the time). I withdrew from medical school as a second year after having taken two nearly year-long leaves of absence and failing my final quarter. My first year medical school GPA was 3.257 with no failures but my final medical school GPA was 2.72. After medical school, I got a computer science degree with a GPA of 3.20 including three failures and multiple withdrawals. Since graduating, I have been working as a network engineer. I had solid ECs when I originally started but haven't done much since withdrawing.

Since graduating with my computer science degree, my mental health issues have finally been diagnosed and treated appropriately and I am confident I could succeed in medical school now given the chance. Since medicine is my passion, I can't help but wonder if there might be any chance of me getting back in. I have started doing some studying for the MCAT again and based on how that's going, and the fact that I can now study much more consistently than I ever could before, I am confident I could perform even better on the MCAT this time around. Would there be any chance that a high MCAT score could help me secure a spot in an SMP and give me a chance to get into any DO school? I had discussed the possibility of getting back in with the dean of my previous medical school and they told me I would have to apply elsewhere. They said my previous failures would still show on my transcript if I ever re-enrolled there, which would tank my residency applications.

I'd really appreciate any realistic feedback, even if it's just "there's no way". Thank you!

I can't ever say you have no chance. There are more medical schools than before, and as long as you were placed on leave in good standing, I would suspect one newer DO school would consider you. Reach out to schools where you want to attend, and don't be picky or aspire to a competitive specialty. I would not return to the school that took you in before unless they encourage you to.
