Considering adding Rush and shooting for mayo bc why not (and someone on reddit told me i should?)

Non-clinical volunteering needs work in the United States, providing face-to-face service to those who need social services. Food distribution, shelter volunteering, job/tax preparation, transportation services, and housing rehabilitation are appropriate. You don't have 150 hours that fit this description of service orientation, so your application is at risk of getting screened out at most schools. Rush looks for those with hundreds of hours in their submitted application (does not include planned/in-progress hours). Helping special needs students in Mexico is noble, but it won't help you here; most premed students do some tutoring, teaching, or mentoring, and 50 hours barely breaks my attention threshold.

it’s not really financially viable for me to do more volunteering than i already do.

i can see where you’re coming from but i think saying i’m going to get screened out due to low nonclinical volunteering with almost [emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6]]]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]][emoji[emoji[emoji6]][emoji[emoji6][emoji6]]]]]k total volunteering is off base. thanks for your time.

You should accumulate 150+ hours of non clinical volunteering such as food bank, homeless shelter, etc. before you submit your application. Otherwise, you could be screened out at some schools. I suggest these schools if you obtain those hours:

OP: sorry, but can you clean your response? It's hard to know what you are responding to. From what I can read: Are you looking for advice, empathy, or attention? I'm only critical because I've worked in advising and admissions and can only tell you what has happened to strong candidates with a similar profile to yours.

sorry, i suppose the app has some issues. thank you for your response.

i do have about one hundred and fifty to two hundred hours volunteering in a pastoral care role with a underserved pop. i included this in clinical vol but i suppose it could count as nonclinical?

it is in a hospital setting, but it is strictly emotional care and spiritual care. i volunteer under a reverend. not sure if if that is nonclinical? what do you think? appreciate your time.

I think pastoral care is valuable regarding compassion and empathy competencies. I think of it as non-clinical since you usually are not involved in clinical activities, but others might give you some credit since you are in a clinical setting. Others can comment.

i see, thanks. another question if i may: what will research oriented med schools think about my pharma experience? i feel like my academic research is okay but wondering if this can bolster it in some ways. i’ve worked in aseptic manufacturing and QC for flu vaccines.

It's neutral to me and from what I recall. PhD students would be jealous, but that's not the audience. Most academic research faculty wish they had projects and salaries comparable to working in pharma/biotech. But that's not carrying over to the admissions committee room.
