In addition to working with the physicians in this clinic, I work closely with community health workers, social workers to prepare petition letters, community resources, and more for the immigrant and refugee population in my city. I volunteer around 8 hours a week here and this is one of my most meaningful activities.
    2. Special Olympics volunteer, 80 hours by time of application

       1. I led an initiative to raise around $200,000 in total to renovate multiple parts of our university campus and support accessibility initiatives (dormitory exercise space, university weight room, cross walk, bike rental services) over my last three years at university and during my last two gap years.

    1. Although I was always generally interested in health and becoming a physician, my experiences in computational biology and pathology research during my first gap year made me realize that I had no answer for “why medicine.” This led me to delaying my application and starting my position as an ophthalmology scribe. My time in the ophthalmology clinic exposed me to a more diverse population (geriatric and special needs), which pushed me to start volunteering with the special olympics and eventually led me to volunteering with the refugee and immigrant clinic. It was at the refugee clinic where I learned more about the services doctors could uniquely provide as civil surgeons and advocates for community health. Although my time at the refugee clinic is currently projected to be around 250 hours by the time of application, this is likely my most meaningful experience as I was able to reflect more on my family and own experiences with healthcare as immigrants in the USA. I hope to center my personal statement around my interest in refugee and immigrant health advocacy.
    2. I will be following up with my university’s pre-health advising process.

Of course.

I usually spend around 7 hours out of the 8 hours at the clinic working with the community health workers and social workers on community service work. For example, the other day I mainly worked with the front desk helping out with filling out documents and billing for the initial immigration medical exam visits. I do sometimes help out in the clinic as we are always understaffed, but more in the capacity of coordinating our doulas and nurses with our physician on call or helping our staff navigate EPIC. I do get to occasionally observe the procedures our OB and family medicine doctors perform and I am involved with patient intakes, but I take more of an office worker role here. Does this help clarify the nature of my work at the immigrant clinic?

It looks like the new PHR website is currently updating the list of PHR chapters in the US as of now. I requested an updated list, but the old list from 2023 (from what I can tell) can be found on the old PHR website at PHR Chapters | PHR Students. Thank you for your help!

They haven't updated their list of chapter clinics in a while, but you can look at the schools represented among the leaders spotlighted. You can also see if specific chapters have separate active social media accounts. (In Becoming a Student Doctor are a couple of videos from chapters.)
