- cumulative GPA: 3.42 and science GPA: 3.51
- MCAT was a 508 (127/123/130/128)
- I am a TX resident
- African-American Male
- I graduated from an HBCU, not a particularly prestigious school
- About 700 hours as a medical scribe. The only caveat is that this was in a private practice podiatry office. This was really the only scribe position I could get that would allow me to pay my bills. ScribeAmerica pays $8.50 which simply wasn't enough for me. I think it has been a great clinical experience though, I think I have been to interact with patients more than I would have scribing in an ED.
- The only shadowing I have is with the podiatrist that I work with, but she does do surgeries and I have shadowed quite a few hours of her surgeries. If I had to estimate I would say about 30-40 hours of shadowing surgeries such as achilles tendon repair, fracture repairs, bunion surgeries, and more. I have been able to do virtual shadowing since it has been difficult to find in person shadowing with an MD/DO, but honestly I don't think schools will view that very favorably. I worry this will be a red flag against me, and I will get some "Why not podiatry?" questions.
- About non-clinical 400hrs volunteering in various different orgs
- I worked as a math tutor at my schools resource center, and I also worked as a math/science tutor for elementary and middle school students through my schools work study program, mostly targeting poor black areas (if that matters at all) ~500 hours
- Some leadership positions such as being an orientation leader, mentor and a math drill instructor.
- Some generic awards such as deans list, latin honors, and a premed honor society
- Hobby - Playing the guitar for over 12 years now, I plan on putting this as one of my most meaningful experiences as it as been an integral part of my life.
- I do have research through LSU, but it was an online opportunity way back when things were moving online. Honestly, I don't think anyone really had a good plan of how to make the experience virtual at the time. We mostly just learned how to read papers (which I actually believe helped me a lot on my BB section of my mcat). If an adcom asked me about me research I honestly don't think I could tell them much because we really didn't do research. I am debating if I should even put this in my application. I don't even know if I technically "finished" the experience as they never sent a certificate till this day.
What do you guys think?
