All of my dental experience is from the second half of college bc I was unsure about my career choices until spring semester of junior year. I didn't join my school's predental org and mainly focused on grinding my shadowing hours and being active in the orgs I was already in.

I only applied to the 4 Texas schools last cycle (slightly higher GPA, same DAT, 150 shadowing hrs), submitted early August, got 2 interviews and no acceptances. I contacted one of the schools to review my app and they recommended that I get more shadowing hours, rewrite my essays, and submit earlier. I did what they suggested and submitted at the end of May this cycle.

I need some help with my OOS school list though. The ones I wrote above seem to have high OOS acceptances, are in places I'm willing to live, and/or have been recommended by friends. That's a lot of schools though and idk if I should consider others but I want to narrow it down to 4 or 5. Do y'all have any suggestions or advice? Thanks!

these are easily in the top 10 of the most expensive dental schools in the country
your stats can get you into cheaper privates

- LECOM
look at texas acceptances over the years, choose privates with higher numbers and closer to TX

- KCU
new school, doesn't accept federal loans
your stats can get you into schools that participate with federal loans

- Indiana
look at texas acceptances over the years, choose publics with higher numbers and closer to TX

- Creighton

i suggest you work on your communication skills and interviewing also...

you need to have mission fit to get interviews and acceptances
high oos acceptance, places willing to live, and recommended by friends are not mission fit

4 to 5 oos schools might be cutting it close with your stats...

you need to have a broad list with a few safety schools, mostly in-range and a couple reaches
1 or 2 oos safeties with 2-4 oos in-range might be ok if you had 23+ and 3.85+ maybe

One question I have for your list: have you checked out the size of the Vietnamese/South Asian population in the cities served by the dental schools on your list? It seems this is important to you.

I purchased the ADEA Dental School explorer and compared the numbers with Path32 to make a new list! I chose these based on average DAT/GPA, acceptance rates and OOS acceptance rates, tuition, and class sizes. I couldn't find information on Texas acceptances aside from the ADEA handbook and tbh that's how I came up with the previous list. The ones I have below accepted 0 to 5 Texas students whereas the first list had more but that might also be due to the larger class sizes...?

- Oregon Health and Science Center
- Indiana University
- University of Louisville
- Creighton

I'm planning to do more interview practice once I get invites. Hopefully I won't be as nervous this year hahaha

your grades are not "high" but they are still pretty good, but your DATs are "high"
the issue is that there are so many TX applicants, it makes them reach schools for everyone
the average matriculant to dental school has a 3.55 gpa and a 20.5 dat

public schools in neighboring states are your in-range
and private schools are your safeties....

Great question! I wouldn't say that's a big priority for me. Although it would be nice to go to a school with a large Asian community, there are other factors that I feel are more important.

I understand. But that might change if you wind up at Creighton (4 Asian matriculants/117 class). I think you might have a great shot at them though.

I hesitate to suggest UCSF. They didn't matriculate any Texas applicants, but that's likely because Texas residents would stay in-state for costs if they had a choice. However, UCSF considers Vietnamese students as underrepresented, even though this is not a factor for admissions. Metrics wise you look to be in their range, but living in SF is very expensive and definitely not like Texas.

off of this second list, keep creighton as a safety and indiana lousiville as in-range
you could add lsu too
maybe case western as a safety
you just don't need all of those expensive privates...

I agree, that's a valid point!

Also, I'm not Viet haha I'm Chinese. I joined VSA for fun and I was also able to get leadership experiences from it. Thank you for the suggestion though!
