Hello everyone, I am new to SDN but will be applying in the coming cycle to DO schools.

(low SES/very rural)

1. GPA: 3.4cGPA, 3.0 sGPA

2. MCAT: 505, (127/125/126/128)

3. State of residence: North Carolina

4. Ethnicity: White

5. Undergraduate Institution or category: Public School (UNC System)

6. Clinical experience: 1000hrs as a hospital transporter, 300hrs CNA

7. Shadowing experience: 100hrs split between internist MD and FM DO

8. Volunteer experience: 300hrs Hospice, 500hrs Meals On Wheels

9. Leadership/other: 6000hrs as an environmental chemist, 1000hrs chemist/logistics supervisor

10. Relevant honors/ awards: Nothing worth mentioning

I plan on applying to every DO school, because with my stats I suppose I do not have the room to be picky.

My horrific GPA is in part, due to me being pulled out of HS at 16 and placed into an early start program with the local community college. During this time I was in the middle of being diagnosed with a rare disorder which saw me running to and from home to the NIH until I was diagnosed and subsequently underwent open heart surgery. I planned to write about this in my statements.

Sorry for such a long explanation but @Goro and the other experienced people on this forum, can someone be too sick for medical school? I've always been able to work a normal, physically intense job, but I worry that some ADCOMS will assume that I am unwell, and thus unfit for medical school.

Thank you everyone.

You can be too sick for medical school if your education must be constantly interrupted to control your illness at the expense of completing the curriculum. See "technical standards" for each medical school on this. Disability assessments are usually not done in admissions committee discussions but are/should be referred out to a select committee for a recommendation should the applicant be accepted. ADA must be followed.

You should apply to appropriate in-state options (UNC, ECU, Campbell at least). Would you consider NHSC?

It was just in that period between 16 to 18, before I attended a university. I'm in my mid 20's now and have worked since full time since 18 so i'd hopefully like to avoid any disability tags.

I will apply to my state schools if you believe that is feasable. NHSC does seem like an option, and I will definitely do more research into it, thank you for mentioning it.

I suggest these DO schools with your stats:
VCOM (all schools except Monroe)
CUSOM
WVSOM
PCOM (all schools)
LECOM (all schools)
ACOM
NOVA
UIWSOM
TUNCOM
AZCOM
KCU-COM
ATSU-KCOM
DMU-COM
MU-COM
LMU-DCOM
Also apply to East Carolina for MD
