Thank you for your vote of confidence! My volunteer work at the peds hospital was focused on playing with the kids there to help make their hospital stay a little better. When COVID hit, I made around 300 toy bags to be sent out to hospitals around the country.Strong resume. Not a lot on non clinical volunteering though you can get a pass on that if you had to help out at home and come from a low ses background. Odds are you have it you just need to talk about how you cared for your family or helped in your community. What did you do at the peds hospital? If you don’t have anything there just work at a food bank for a month.
With that mcat and the right essays you could take home an acceptance at any school in the country.
I’d contact some people from LMSA at your target schools and get in with the mimentor program for application help.
Add Chicago, Wash U, Penn, nyu, Einstein. Stanford and Harvard too. If you qualified for FAP shoot your shot At the best schools in the country. You’re pretty safe with the Texas schools. A good friend of mine went to Wash U with a similar story/stats. Also from Texas.
Drop the state oos schools for the most part.
Yes, I am! Is it too late to message these schools about this program? I haven't heard of mimentor before so I'm not familiar with the process.Mimentor, if you can get it the program, would be great at assessing and possibly improving your chances of getting in at UCR, USC,and other CA schools. Are you applying this cycle?
I'll definitely look into mimentor, I had not heard of this org but it looks very interesting! I grew up in the Panhandle so proximity-wise I'm closest to Texas Tech in Lubbock but I think my background best aligns with their El Paso branch. I left out RGV because I had to take biochem online as part of my DIY post-bac and they do not accept online pre-reqs. I also left out UT Tyler since it seems they strongly prefer students with ties to East Texas and I have none.Where did you grow up in Texas? That may make a difference given the missions of the Texas schools on your list (not RGV? Tyler if you are from the eastern counties of Texas that they prefer).
As noted, it may serve you to be connected with LMSA chapter officers. Check out MiMentor, though they may be mostly Californian but many of their webinars may be relevant.
I agree that you should consider OOS if you know you want to be there and get a significant scholarship to at least match Texas.
