Hi! Looking for help editing my school list as I'm worried it's too top-heavy and I want to apply to 20-25ish schools. I've always loved teaching (PS topic) and I want to pursue a career in academic medicine, possibly peds.
  1. cGPA: 3.96 and sGPA: 3.95
  2. MCAT: 521 (130/132/130/129)
  3. State of residence: FL
  4. White female
  5. Undergraduate institution: UF
  6. Clinical experience: 1300 as a med-surg PCA, no clinical volunteering.
  7. Research: 200 in a nutritional science lab (projecting 100 more), no posters/pubs. I've presented posters before, but not sure if/how to include in my app? One poster for a prevention science class project at undergrad research symposium, one about patient education at pre-health mentorship program expo that got 2nd place.
  8. Shadowing: 30 plastic surgery, 20 maternal-fetal medicine, 10 dermatology, 80 virtual shadowing of a bunch of different specialties
  9. Non-clinical volunteering: 120 as a camp counselor for children with serious illnesses, 30 at a preschool, 20 for Meals on Wheels (projecting 20 more)
  10. Other extracurricular activities: 500 as a substitute preschool teacher, 200 as a biochem TA for 3 semesters, 50 as a member of pre-health mentorship program, 1800 projected for gap year AmeriCorps volunteering with young children
  11. Relevant honors or awards: Dean's List x8, President's Honor Roll, Bright Futures/UF/Benacquisto scholarship (full COA), FL Top Academic Scholar (highest academic ranking of college students in my county so I got extra $$)

Welcome to the forums. On face value, I think you check out on service orientation; decent cannon fodder and you should get some action within your state schools. I would like clarification. What is your purpose as a physician, and how do your activities stress this motivation?

I've always loved teaching (biochem TA, preschool teacher). I also really enjoyed building relationships with patients and being able to help when they're not feeling their best (PCA). Being a physician would provide all of this but with a greater impact, plus the depth of scientific knowledge and lifelong learning that I want. I see myself working in academic medicine where I can help educate in different ways: taking care of patients, teaching medical students/residents, doing research. All of my research experience has been at the bench but I think I'd enjoy clinical research much more.

I would try to get 150 hours for meals for wheels if you can. Unless your camp counselor volunteering was specifically with underserved. Some schools screen for service.
