I’m a reapplicant from CA (applied 20-21 cycle). Activities marked with * are new since my last app. Please suggest schools, especially mid-tier/OOS friendly!

6. Clinical experience (volunteer and non-volunteer):
-EMT volunteer (with leadership): ~450 hours
-EMT/clinical paid*: 1400+ hours

7. Research experience and productivity:

-Research internship: 440 hours
-RA position*: ~4000 hours, will likely have at least one first author pub by matriculation

8. Shadowing experience and specialties represented:
-12 hours in person emergency med
-75+ hours virtual*

9. Non-clinical volunteering:
-Food bank volunteer: 75 hours
-Teaching cooking classes to underprivileged kids*: 80 hours

10. Other extracurricular activities (including athletics, military service, gap year activities, leadership, teaching, etc)
-Student org 1 (healthcare related): ~400 hours, had leadership, had significant impact in moving the org forward, was involved in outreach and teaching efforts
-Student org 2 (professional org): ~100 hours, related to food insecurity
-Taught a student-run course: 75 hours
-Tutor/course instructor: ~200 hours

11. Anything else not listed you think might be important: I have some fun hobbies that I might include, I did a cool minor

Did you receive any interviews?

Leave off the the medical volunteer trip as it comes across as voluntourism (particularly if it was not in Mexico). You have ample clinical experience in the US now. Did you write about the trip in your personal statement?

I got one interview at a T20 that turned into a WL. I left the trip off my app last time for that reason but thought I'd add it here in case anyone had tips about if/how I should incorporate it for this cycle.

Can you elaborate on the food insecurity activity? How is it different from the food bank activity?
I tried to keep it vague so I wouldn't dox myself but broadly the food insecurity activity was more about nutrition education/fundraising with a focus on students/the campus community, and the food bank activity involved actually distributing food to people in the city regardless of campus affiliation.

I would leave it off personally. You can replace it with a slot for your hobby as that shows you have outside interests and it can be a conversation item in an interview.

I suggest you try to get in-person shadowing and continue to bolster your non-clinical hours. Private practices may be more open to students shadowing and CA has lifted restrictions recently.
